The Penfifteen Club is one of those bands.
You know, you can count them on one or two hands; bands that get it. Classic and fairly straightforward, alternately bringing the sounds of supremely crafted pop and sexy 1970's rock into the framework. You will hear bits of Cheap Trick (think: "I Want You to Want Me"), the early Kinks (think: "You really Got Me"), Big Star or Teenage Fanclub (think: "What You Do To Me"). Since they are obviously into good music themselves, the list of influences could go on. Their music has a touch of pop like their friends (and sometime bandmates) Sugarcult, but they are much edgier leaning toward metal with a punk sensibility at times. That said, the Penfifteen Club does bring their own recipe. They manage to sneak in a funky element that demands you to move your hips ("Disco MF"). The more rocking songs really punch the energy level up ("Ms. Hilton," "Sparks Fly," "High Low Class"). A touch of sarcasm and wit run through the core, which is a refreshing contrast to so many serious bands, and the musicianship is strong, with each member contributing solidly to the final product. Luke Tierney shines up front with vocals ripe with emotion and swagger, and the rich harmonies add a lot and result in a full sound on songs like "Go Home With You" and "Never Again." If you loved the classic Small Faces, Stones, ELO, AC/DC, and if you are into newer bands such as Jet, the Killers, etc., give these guys a listen. They are sure not to disappoint.

I love this CD and I can't wait for the next one. Disco MF has to the coolest song I have heard in the last 5 years. Keep it up and I hope record execs realize what they have with this band.
