4.0 out of 5 stars a return to form for JH
IMHO, this is Juliana's most accessible work since "Only Everything". It's not quite at the level of that album or "Become What You Are", but captures much more of the vibe of those two records than "Total System Failure". I am a huge Juliana Hatfield fan, and have been for nearly 10 years. However, this album dissapoints me a little. The three girls are so talented, and I was expecting so much more from this...but it really lacks, IMO.

There just is hardly any energy here...especially from old Jules. I want the Juliana that sings from her gut. I want the Juliana that rips a good solo. But in this CD, there's just no emotion...it sounds so programmed.

Now, this is in no way a diss to any of these ladies...I love all three of them. BUt I just expected more from a trio of rockin' ladies of this quality.

Still, there are some very enjoyable tracks on here. Feel It and Neccesito stick out, IMO.

This albums to me needs a little more energy, a little more polish, and then it would be fantastic. I know these three can do better.

Still, I give it 3 stars because the tracks are catchy enough, and it is a fun album. I just think these three could do better.

3.0 out of 5 stars Sneakers and Tube Tops...Donuts and Beer..., June 28, 2004

Maybe that's a stupid way of saying it, but as a Juliana Hatfield/Blake Babies fan, I feel that "Feel It" is a nice transitional album for these 3 talented ladies. Some Girls is a great detour and a handy cd to have in your collection, if you are a fan of Hatfield or Freda Boner, or any of their respective bands. Tracks that really stand out are "Prettiest Girl","Malted Milk" and "The Getaway," which I recently heard while shopping in the GAP. Other songs like "Robot City" and"On My Back" become a bit lost in repetition. In all, buy this record for the soundtrack of a Sunday drive or an afternoon picnic. It will perk up the blues in your dreary day.

4.0 out of 5 stars "You Don't Know" how good this is., April 18, 2004

This probably sounds like most would expect, and if you don't know what to expect, it's good simple alt-pop, and very easy to like. It roughly has the same sound as "Juliana Hatfield's" catchier stuff, and really seems to be her album for the most part. It's nothing too deep, just fun. My favorite tracks are "Feel It", "Necessito", and "On My Back", but they're all similar. Hopefully they release some more, and get out on the road as well. I believe "Juliana" has another solo disc out too. All are recommended.

I love the way Juliana can say a few words so sweetly yet so bitterly! My fave is "Almost True" and my fave line in it is "But when I find God, I'll keep it to myself." This album is definitely more poppy than I tend to like, but I am just a sucker for Juliana and her sassy lyrics. And it is a little more bold than some of the Blake Babies stuff. Like all her albums, it makes you want to kiss her or be her, either way...

4.0 out of 5 stars Welcome back, Juliana!, September 24, 2003

After almost a decade of shaky albums (Bed, Total System Failure), Juliana Hatfield shifts gears and produces her most enjoyable album since Only Everything. By re-entering the band dynamic, with old Blake Babies bandmate Freda Love and bassist/multi-instrumentalist Heidi Gluck, Hatfield has rediscovered her sense of melody and lyrical bite.

The subtle guitar chug of opener "Feel It" immediately makes a good impression. A simple little riff, Love's bizarre, almost machine-like drumming and a pretty vocal harmony combine to make a good pop song. Gluck steals the show on the propelling "Just Like the First Time" where her elemental slide- guitar part makes the song, and the warm, affectionate "Almost True" has Hatfield's loveliest singing since "My Darling". Gluck's instrumental embellishments are just fantastic: When that harmonica comes into "Almost True", it turns the college-pop soundscape upside down...and unbelievably beautiful. She may be the brightest spark on this new record.

I was a little disappointed that Hatfield's guitar playing is a little repetitive, with the same basic, slightly fuzzed-out rhythm tone in every song. She used to be a much more creative guitar player on past works like "My Sister" (with its addictive shimmering chimes/fuzz chords contrast) and "My Darling" (with acoustic and electric versions, different but equally good). There's one screeching solo on "You Don't Know", but she used to be more creative in her rhythm playing.

Thankfully Hatfield's rejuvenated sense of songwriting, complemented by some nice Freda Love compositions, is enough to compensate for this weakness. Heidi Gluck's inventive choice of instruments and country influence also enhance the record's sonic palette. A good pop record, free of baggage and very listenable.

5.0 out of 5 stars "on my back i can become one with the couch i'm living on", September 10, 2003

i have been a pretty big fan of juliana hatfield since her days with the blake babies. when i heard that she was in a new band i was intigued. then when i heard that freda love form the blake babies would be in it as well i knew i had to buy this cd when it came out. i've never been a fan of all girl bands but this cd is really good. the oepening title track shows just what this cd is going to deliver. bouncing riffs set against tight drums and bass. the sound may seem similar to juliana's solo stuff but there are pelnty of touches added that make it quite clear that it isn't a juliana hatfield cd. from the harmonica on almost true to the piano that is laced through a few of the tracks. highlights include the title track, almost true, on my back, launch pad, you don't know, and mlated milk. this is an excellent debut for a promising band. let's hope they stick around to put more great music out.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great album, October 9, 2004
This review is from: Feel It (Audio CD)
Another great album by Juliana Hatfield, this time with old Blake Babies hand Freda Love Smith and a new addition in Heidi Gluck. Every track on this album is listenable and sounds great.

As for the 'talentless bimbettes' comment, Juliana Hatfield was ripping up the alternative music world while the Donnas were still in elementary school (back when the term "alternative music" actually meant something). She has more rock cred in her toenail than those pretenders could ever aspire to.

This album is all right--but doesn't approach Juliana's last band effort on "God Bless..." or even the prev. unreleased songs on Gold Stars. If you're a J fan, it's definitely worth having, and, like someone else said, does have "staying power." But the songs are rather similar to each other--and nothing new here. I have found some of her solo albums to sound more "bandy" than this--like the brilliant "bed" or "please do not..." Anyway, everything J touches is great--and this is a good album. I like "Feel It" best. "Necessito" is kinda lame to me for some reason--and I can't believe that other reviewer thinks it's one of her "catchiest" songs!!! Just goes to show how diverse we are in taste.

This album was recorded in about a week, and the result is the most stripped-down sounding album of Juliana Hatfield's career. Feel It is filled with pop/rock songs with sweet melodies that will have you bobbing your head and singing along. It's really enjoyable from the very first listen, yet has definite staying power. It also has possibly the most catchy song Juliana has ever written with "necessito". One of the great things about Juliana is that with each new album/project she's always going in different directions, and trying new things. You never get the feeling that she's trying to rehash something from the past. Amazingly it also seems like she's still climbing the ladder as each album gets better and better. This is definitely a rare quality to possess today when so many musicians peak at a much younger age and then drop off soon after.
