Solid Essays, Some Better than Others,

This review is from: To Feel These Things (Paperback)
Leonard Michaels supplements his great fiction with a selection of autobiographical essays. The book is short, a mere 140 pages. The best essays are "Honeymoon" (the description of when Michaels worked as a busboy in the mountains, and of how a new bride fell in love with a handball playing waiter there), "The Nicest Shoes" (a great account of Michaels' time in LA, following around starlets and wanna-be actors), "Movie Eyes" (a truly personal essay about how it felt for the Hollywood types to make a movie about his novel, The Men's Club, and "No Time for Nina" (a recount of the time his physicist friend broke up with a long-time girlfriend).
All the essays are well-written, some more interesting than others, but all have that distinct lyrical prose for which Michaels is famous. |
