Editorial Reviews

Entertainment Weekly

One of stand-ups’s most scathingly literate minds.

Product Description

Patton Oswalt watched a man shave his balls, and he's fixin' to tell you about it. Reminiscent of the arrival of legendary shockers like George Carlin and Bill Hicks, Patton Oswalt's first CD (available for the first time in vinyl LP format), 2004's ''Feelin' Kinda Patton,'' put him on the radar as a standard-bearer for the new generation of comedians. Oswalt counts among his peers David Cross, Sarah Silverman, and Jim Gaffigan - the sort of young comedians who, as Oswalt illuminates with a surreal and utterly brilliant monologue stolen verbatim from Dr. Pepper (a drug-addled open mic night standout from Toronto), once thought they were the ultimate in envelope-pushing, until they were faced with flat-out crazy. Of that group, Oswalt may have found the most mainstream entertainment success, thanks to a stint on the sitcom King of Queens and a turn as Remi the Rat, lead character in the Oscar-winning animated film Ratatouille, but ''Feelin' Kinda Patton'' reminds listeners that not even adults should be left alone in a room with this devious and tainted little man. For all the spit-polish producers can put on him when the spotlight beckons, raw Patton is stunning here from the opener to the very last howl of the set. Oswalt's particularly on point when he takes on impressions; without aiming for mimicry, his send-up of the ambient insanity of the pop-culture in which each and every one of us is steeped is enough to take down even the most stoic listener. Mining hilarity in the everyday, Patton Oswalt, elfin filth-monger, steers clear of politics in this exuberant leap over the edge, skillfully taking each bit to its illogical conclusion and beyond and deftly handling distractions by simply following the tangent off the deep end. If that isn't enough wait until you get a load out of the new LP cover art, a six color silk-screen by Mike 2600 of Burlesque Design, featuring a cut out playset of characters pulled straight out of Patton's performance. What are you waiting for? This limited edition of 500 is sure to go out of print quickly.

4.0 out of 5 stars If you already know you like Patton get "222", April 27, 2006
This review is from: Feelin' Kinda Patton (Audio CD)
"222" is the 2-disc uncut version of this standup set. Its a full 2-discs, but it is non-stop funny. If you know that you like Patton's standup (from watching Comedians of Comedy, or his Comedy Central special) save yourself the trouble and get 222. Its only sold through a smaller site (or at indy record stores, apparently) you can find that if you go to Patton's website.

So, really, there's no reason that you shouldn't buy this CD, but if you want the "full" Patton Oswalt experience, hunt down a copy of 222 while you still can!

5.0 out of 5 stars A heroin-crazed Rodney Allen Rippy..., January 13, 2005

This review is from: Feelin' Kinda Patton (Audio CD)
Patton Oswalt is one of the best comedians going today. The reason: he has respect for comedy. This CD is a perfect example of that respect. In comedy, you can pull no punches. You can't lay off people because they are the president, or metally retarded...or both. Patton's gift is in his descriptive phrasing. He gives so much description into the scenes he paints that you can almost see it. It makes the joke even funnier because you are using almost every single sense you have in order to experience the joke. His best bits are hilarious:

His take on Black Angus and steak in general
80's Metal
Robert Evans on ESPN(anyone who heard those spots will crack up with laughter because it is essentially true)
Bad porn advertising
And my favorite bit...Stella D'oro breakfast treats!(I remember those ads!)

I recommend that you listen to this CD in your house sitting down. Do not use while driving because you will have an accident. Keep it up, Patton. I can't wait to hear another CD.

5.0 out of 5 stars What A Great CD, January 25, 2005
This review is from: Feelin' Kinda Patton (Audio CD)
Patton Oswalt is a sheer comic genius. This CD of his proves it once and for all. I've heard a lot of his routines, and the unique thing about him is that he doesnt have the exact same routine with the exact same jokes on all of them. Most comedians have the same jokes over and over, which is usually okay because they're traveling to different audiences who havent heard them yet. But he's so creatively funny, he makes me laugh louder, longer, and most frequently than any other comedian i've heard in a while, and i listen to almost any big name comedian out there. be it lewis black or jerry seinfeld, george carlin or denis leary, patton oswalt has the better jokes in his routine. this is a must-get if you are into good comedy.
