Book Description

April 1, 2000
"No one knows the value of 'looking hot' as much as teens do. Having it 'together' can spell the difference between being one of the crowd-or not. But the 'success potion' isn't found in a bottle or a pill any more than in a great outfit or the latest hairstyle, eye shadow or nail polish. It's also more important than winning the approval it takes to be the most popular 'in' person at school. The really 'beautiful' are those comfortable in their own skin, who make the most of their natural beauty and have learned to like themselves. Jennifer's practical advice will show you how."
-Kate MacIsaac
1997 Miss California Teen All American
Miss Teen U.S.A.

Jennifer Leigh Youngs, coauthor of the bestseller, Taste Berries for Teens, created this complete guidebook for every girl's teen years. Ranging the gamut from healthy eating, fitness and stress reduction, to skin and hair care, fashion, makeup and more, this book offers girls all they need to feel beautiful, inside and out.

Although the author offers helpful tips on all of the above, even more important, she shows girls that it's what's on the inside that truly makes each of us beautiful. This book also includes photographs, which beautifully and effectively illustrate the principles the author teaches. As they journey through the challenging years of adolescence, girls will find the information and advice in this book invaluable. This book is destined to become a favorite with teens and adolescents.

Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Grade 7-10-This self-help book focuses on inner and outer beauty, offering positive, upbeat advice on a variety of topics such as self-esteem; skin, nail, and hair care; healthy eating; fitness; body piercing and tattoos; fashion; and makeup. The author reminds teens that it is unhealthy to compare themselves to the "perfect model" and that everyone has a different body type and shape. Unfortunately, however, all the photos show teens who look like traditional beauty queens, including the author herself. The text is written in a conversational, informal style, and the discussions of grades, dating, and choice of clothing will ring true to most young people. Thought-provoking questions and checklists are integrated throughout. Basically, this book will appeal to white middle-class girls who enjoy Seventeen magazine.

2.0 out of 5 stars UNREALISTIC, December 27, 2001

This review is from: Feeling Great, Looking Hot and Loving Yourself!: Health, Fitness and Beauty for Teens (Paperback)
I thought that this book has some good facts but on the other hand, It had a really unrealistic feel to it. It sounds like the author, lives in a fairyland world far from what is really happening. I really did not enjoy the book and was very unhappy with the author's job on writing it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Feeling Great, Looking Hot, and Loving Yourself, June 15, 2000

I think that this book is a great source of information for teenagers. It provides great advice for teenagers feeling lost or confused. I think that every parent should have a copy of this book to give to their growing up child. I especially liked the foreward by Bettie B. Youngs. She sure is educated. The diet and exercise portion is exactly what teens need because they worry about their appearence so much.It tells about potion size which is the most important. My daughter loves this book!

1.0 out of 5 stars Unhelpful and Outdated, July 9, 2003
This review is from: Feeling Great, Looking Hot and Loving Yourself!: Health, Fitness and Beauty for Teens (Paperback)
I'm glad that I got this book out from the library instead of buying it. It provides extremely conventional advice about self-esteem and makeup, and the clothes the author suggests for teens seem like they're straight from the 80's. I really don't know anyone who wears scarves, overalls, or blouses to school. The language and general writing style of the author also seems outdated. I actually checked the publishing date to see if this was a 90's book; it's a 2000 book. Ms. Youngs even uses the 80's spring/summer/autumn/winter system of choosing clothing and makeup colors. It's also annoying that the book encourages confidence in one's looks and "beauty diversity", yet has photos mostly of stereotypical blonde-haired-blue-eyed all-american-girls. The author herself was a Miss Teen Claifornia finalist, so I suppose one couln't expect much more. I would avoid buying this for a young girl, or avoid buying it for yourself if you are a young girl.
