A great big breath of freash air!, February 6, 2009
I don't know a whole lot about this man, Dent May. I stumbled across a video for "Oh, Paris!" while randomly looking up ukelele videos on the internet. I'd bought a ukelele for fun and refreshment from my guitar. Dent May was and is a refreshing experience as well.
This man, Dent May, and his slim-fit, mustard coloured trousers is something special. His music doesn't rely on the typical speed and/or wall-of-sound energy to attract listeners. Nor does he have overtly complex word-play, allusions to rare French Situationist authors, or an ability to rip-off blues recordings from the thirties and forties.
What Dent May does is combine seemingly simple lyrics with beautiful melodies in an original way. He also has a great voice... its hard to describe. It sounds deep, but... its not at the same time. What his voice is, is unexpected.
Some of his songs sound sparse. And there's a beauty in that, too. He doesn't overdo anything, be it the ukelele, synthesizer, whatever. This man, Dent May, who hails from a Mississippi town about the size of my backyard, is the King of Control; the Sultan of subtlety.
A lot of people (and by that I mean the few things I've read about Dent May which may very well have been written by himself, speaks of his French Pop influence. However, if you need a person to compare Dent May too, I'd look at Buddy Holly, especially those three late recordings he did with an orchestra.
This is May's first album. Check out some of the songs and this review might sound sensical afterwards. "Oh, Paris!" may very well become his best known song, at least off this record. However, for me, "Meet Me In the Garden" is the best.
This is a song-by-song solid record of music that... I don't know. Just check Dent May out, he's the biggest thing to hit the ukelele since Don Ho... and Don Ho was a very, very, big man.

This is what Morrissey would sound like if he could actually write tolerable lyrics.
I haven't wanted to physically make love to an album like this in a long time.
