5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful
This is the first novel that I read by Maggie Shayne and fell in love with the author. It was a cute novel and I was able to read it in 2 days. Kara is a loving person, Tyler a wonderful child who breaks your heart, and Jimmy reaches your heart through his love for his son.

This was a disappointment from such a well known author. Jimmy corona retunes back to his home town 10 years later and after 48 hours becomes involved with Kara Brand a shy, awkward girl he know from highschool who is now beautiful. He just uses her through out the whole book so she can become attached to him and he's son who has a disability. He just wants a Mother for his son. Finally 3 or 4 pages from the end Jimmy finally gets it and now loves her. Not a believable story at all. Plus, the cover gives you a Christmas theme feeling and that is not want this story is about. Don't bother.

I picked this up hoping for a good book like Maggie's other stories but boy was I wrong! The love story is unbelivable and there are like no sex scenes at all which is a suprise because Maggie Shayne can write some pretty hot sex scenes but not a one in this one. Oh yeah about the book cover whoever done this book cover obviously had no idea what the book was supposed to be about they totally missed it, it had nothing whatsoever to do about Christmas!

Jimmy Corona's ex wife is a drug addict, who signed away custody of their son when he was a month old, after she injured his legs when she fell down the stairs with him. Jimmy has decided Tyler needs a mother so he cold bloodedly sets out to find a wife. His plan is a loveless, sexless marriage which will end in a divorce when Tyler reaches 18. He doesn't intend to let the woman in on his plans until after they are married. He returns to his hometown and runs into Kara Brand who has turned into a beautiful woman that his son Tyler immediately adores. When he finds out Kara has loved him since high school he figures he won't have any trouble trapping her by pretending to love her, using Tyler as the final bait.

Jimmy is a conscientless user. If he loves his son so much why would he give him the example that marriage means nothing with one-sided love and based on lies. Jimmy is going to stand up in front of God and say vows he has no intention of keeping. "Love (doesn't figure into the picture for him), honor (what he's doing is very dishonorable), cherish (he doesn't care), faithful only to each other (I can't imagine a 30 year old man going without sex for 15 years so he will cheat) till death do us part (or until Tyler is grown, whichever comes first)"

And Kara, though she knows something is not right, has so little pride and is such a naive, wimpy girl (girl fits because she's childish) that she lets Jimmy use her. Frankly they were both disgusting! Oh and the sex scenes which Maggie Shayne can really write? There weren't any. Also as others pointed out the cover is not at all representative of the story.

If you are reading the whole Oklahoma and Texas Brand series you might want to read this one. Otherwise give it a wide berth.
