4.0 out of 5 stars Better than I Expected, June 26, 2003
By
This review is from: Feels So Good (Audio CD)
Let me start by saying that I'm impressed! I saw Josephine perform live at Dave & Buster's in Philly and she put on one hell of a show. Her performance of "Walk on By" was so bananaz that I bought her CD the next day. Even though she has a buzz goin' in this area, I was skeptical about buying the CD because she's so young and I expected the typical teen garbage. I was wrong! This young lady is remarkable, and the CD lives up to all the hype. "Killing Me Softly" is gorgeous, and "Jane" is outstanding. This is not your typical teenager CD. This is music!

5.0 out of 5 stars Could This Be The Next Big Name Outa Philly?, May 18, 2003

After listening to Josephine Sincere's CD, I continue to be amazed at how the city continues to turn out first-rate artists (Jill Scott, The Roots, Bilal, Floetry...). Add this sixteen year old singer to that mix. I listen to a LOT of music, and this CD is the real thing. It's sometimes hard to believe that she's still in high school when you hear her seasoned vocals on songs like "If U Take Your Luv" and "Fels So Good."

The two things to listen for on this CD are the way Josephine immerses herself into each song and performs them with a sense of believability and emotion that singers her age shouldn't be able to do. A perfect example of this is on the songs "Mamma" and "Jane" -- both powerful songs! The other thing to listen for are the cleverly-crafted songs. There are a variety of styles and elements of soul, old-school jazz, and hip-hop, but there is also a sense of continuity to the songs. Contrary to what some might think, not all Philly artists are on the neo-soul vibe. Her album to me is simply good R&B. Her voice is strong, emotive, and has character, and she sounds wonderful throughout. This is an EXCELLENT album! I rate this CD second only to Donnie's ("Colored Section") as the absolute BEST two R&B CDs this year.

4.0 out of 5 stars Wow! Very impressive debut for the 16 year-old!, May 14, 2003

I picked up a copy of this CD because of all of the hype about it, and I must admit that I was pleasantly surprised by what I heard. This young lady sounds gooooood (reminds me of Lauryn Hill), and to be so young, her controlled voice is all the more impressive. The real beauty of this CD are the songs and how she brings them to life. Her rendition the often-recorded classic "Killing Me Softly" is worth the $(...) alone. The arrangement is kinda different, too, which makes this song special. I also like the fact that she is not singing teenie-bopper music or "rapper R&B" (such as 3LW, Ashanti, etc.).

The song, "Mamma" brought tears to my eyes, because, as the daughter of a single mother, I related to it 100%. "Feels So Good," "If," "Walk on By," and "I Wish" are equally wonderful. But the troubling single "Jane" is a mini-masterwork. If you like Lauren Hill and even Jill Scott, I'm sure you'll enjoy Josephine's CD. It's not perfect, but it's the best CD I've purchase so far this year.

4.0 out of 5 stars A promosing new talent, a strong debut CD, May 29, 2003
This review is from: Feels So Good (Audio CD)
It seems anymore that when I receive CDs to review from Philadelphia I feel a certain level of eager anticipation as I place the CD into my stereo to listen. The reason is because Philly is producing so much inspiring music these days. The new CD by Philly newcomer, Josephine Sincere, did not disappoint.

The combination of solid song writing, real instrumentation (on many songs), and a wonderfully gifted young vocalist meld to give birth to one of the overall strongest discs I've reviewed in a while. There is a certain flow to the CD that mimics the shape of sound itself: The opening salvo of "Feels So Good" and "Killing Me Softly" smoothly gives way to a more mellow segment of the disc centered around a true gem of a song entitled, "If You Take Your Love." THIS, is Philly Soul! The tempo of the CD picks up again with a more urban feel from "He's Mine" and the ode to Philadelphia, "I Wish."

Possibly the most marketable and thought-provoking cut on the CD is "Jane" featuring former Rush Associated Labels (as in Russell Simmons) emcee RuggedNess. Don't get the wrong idea. Just because the song is "marketable" doesn't mean it's not hot -- it is...ta def. And so is this CD.

I heard that this CD was tight, but I NEVER expected it to be this good! This CD is proof that real R&B is still alive and well!

The single "JANE" will become a classic...mark my word!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Lots of Great Music!, January 24, 2004

When I saw the "Jane" video I wanted to buy the record because it was so "real". My only hope was that there were other songs on the CD equally as good. There are...plenty of them. This album is full of really terrific songs, and to be so young...it's extra surprising! The CD made me want to hear more from Miss Sincere, so I bought the E.P. which has her live audio and video performances on it. To my surprise, she is an incredible live performer and not just some studio marvel. You go girl!

4.0 out of 5 stars You Ain't Heard Nothin' Yet!, November 6, 2003

If you live anywhere near the city if Illadelph, you've no doubt heard how impressive Josephine Sincere's CD "Feels So Good" is. And impressive it is: her voice is solid -- she can REALLY sing, the music is infectious and refreshing, and the songs are real R&B. The real treats on this CD are "Kiling Me Softly," "Mamma," "If U Take Your Luv," and "Jane." WOW... "Jane"!! What a powerful song! I loved the song by itself, but when I saw the video, I actually shed a tear. You owe it to yourself to experience this young lady's (17-years old) work.

But guess what -- you Ain't Heard Nothin' Yet! Being a member of Philly's media, I got to hear some of the live material from her next CD and it is scarry good! (she's performing with a hot Jazz band). So, I highly recommend "Feels So Good" as a means of introducing yourself to a truly gifted young talent. You'll also appreciate the fact that she's bringing it on a whole different vibe.

5.0 out of 5 stars I'm In Love With This CD!, May 19, 2003

This is the way an R&B album should be: passionate singing, meaningful songs, and variety! When I got the CD, it took me nearly 2 hours to listen to the whole thing because I kept replaying the songs "Feels So Good", "Jane" and "Killing Me Softly" (more about this song later) -- and these songs are just the FIRST 3 SONGS ON THE CD!! Now, back to "Killing Me Softly"... one word "BEAUTIFUL!" I think this is the best version of the song since the original by Aretha Franklin. It's very different, and is still beautiful. This young lady KILLS this song!

There are too many outstanding songs on this CD to give credit to them all here, but I have to mention "Jane" (powerful!), "Feels So Good" (check the intro), and "Call Me" (Whew!). Josephine and singer Solomon Trotter take this song to church -- I LOVE it! This is NOT a teen album, but is instead an outstanding album that just happens to have been recorded by a teenager. But after the opening vocals, you will forget that this is a teenager singing.

What's great about this CD is that there are no slow points or lulls throughout. It doesn't get monotonous like so many albums out of Philly. But the kicker is that -- if the buzz is true -- this CD was released on a tiny independent label!! But it is better that 90% of the CDs the giant record companies are releasing these days.
