From "FeFe who?" to "GIMME MORE!!",
By S. Noble "Lover of All Things Written and Spoken" (Atlanta, GA United States) - See all my reviews (REAL NAME)
This review is from: Fefe Dobson (Audio CD)
I had the pleasure of meeting FeFe and seeing her perform live here in Atlanta recently. Before the concert, I was like, "FeFe who??" But after meeting her and watching her performance, she is absolutely AMAZING!! She is a multi-talented little 18 year old bundle of absolute energy, stage presence, and charisma. I picked up the CD at the concert, and have thoroughly enjoyed it ever since! It has something for everyone - from the hard-edged rock songs "Stupid Little Love Song" and "Bye Bye Boyfriend", to the absolute FABULOUS appearance of Tone-Loc on "Rock It Till You Drop It", to the meatal-esque anger of "Unforgiven", to the beautiful and sultry sounds of "Revolution Song" and the hidden track "Rainbow", to the pop stylings of "Everything" and "We Went For A Ride" (one of my personal favorites). This CD is absolutely AMAZING, running the whole gammit of genres. And to top it all off, every single one of the 13 songs on this debut CD was co-written by FeFe herself. She is an amazing person with endless potential. This is one newcomer I'd DEFINATELY recommend!!

Fefe, do your thing!,

I just the read the review written by Tanika from Brentwood, NY and I cannot believe the ignorance displayed. Considering myself one of "your people" (FYI- both myself and Ms. Dobson are biracial), you need to get it straight. We can perform in ANY musical genre we desire. How incredibly narrow-minded to say that we "don't do grunge or punk"! Where do you think the roots of rock 'n roll lie? With us, in the southern blues of the 40's and 50's. Your comment is so typical of the misconception that skin color or race has anything to do with music. All that said, Fefe's album is a nice pop/punk piece akin to Avril and I wish her all the luck in this business.

Very, very surprising,

Gotta admit ... when I first saw Fefe, I thought, oh no, not another pretentious rocker chick! I couldn't have been more wrong. This is a remarkable debut album; I would categorize it as Rock Lite, but I don't mean that in a disparaging way. Rarely do I buy an album and like all of the songs, but I listened to this all the way through and liked pretty much everything. The first track, Stupid Little Love Song, is probably my least favorite, but I certainly didn't hate it. Fefe tackles some age-specific themes, like absentee dads and messed-up friends, as well as the usual love songs mixed with a little Girl Power. She wisely uses a co-writer for many of the songs on this album, so it escapes the common problem of everything sounding the same, and overall the CD ranges from a fairly driving beat to quite ballady. Rock It Till You Drop It is especially fun ... but then, it does sample Eric Clapton's It's In the Way that You Use It, so I guess that's no surprise. Some great ballads, too -- Julia, 8x10, and the bonus track, #13, a ballad that may or may not be called "I'm No Fool" ... it's not mentioned anywhere on the liner notes. This girl is talented. Hope to see more of her.

Fefe: the most promising star of 2004,
By Michael (San Diego, CA) - See all my reviews

Fefe Dobson is incredible. In a world full of "posers" Fefe emerges with a REAL sound. Her music had pop, punk, hip hop and even jazz influences. This album is awesome for a new artistStupid Little Love Song (5/5)-This is in my opinion the best song on the CD. It's very punked out and has quirky lyrics. A very good opener for the CD. Go Fefe. Bye Bye Boyfriend (5/5)-A very good song. It goes from slow ballad to powerful rockin song. The upfront in your face lyrics make u want to sing along. Another winner. Take Me Away (4.5/5)-The first single. This song is very good for just rockin out. The lyrics are evry relatable Everything (5/5) -The song that really made me notice Fefe. This is a good pop ballad with a relatable message. Great to sing along too and great second single. Rock It Til You Drop It (4/5) -A great song featuring old school rapper Tone Loc. A hip hop influenced rock song about just being young, partying and having a laugh. Revolution Song (3/5)-My least favorite song. It's a good song but I don't really feel it. A slow ballad. Kiss Me Fool (4/5)- Great song about changing yourself for a guy. A very good rock/pop song. Unforgiven (5/5)-This song is very awesome. It's a scream to her absent dad and letting him know how much she despises him. It's a very in your face song. Great production. We Went For A Ride (5/5)-My second fave song. It has a very nice jazz feel to it. It's very mellow and chill. I love it, it relaxes me. It sound like something that wold come on a jazz or soft rock station. Give It Up (4/5)-Good song with great message about girls giving it up to guys. A very rockin song. I know I say that a lot. Tee hee. Julia (4.5/5)-I like this song. It's about helping her best friend Julia. It's very relaxed and mellow kinda like track 9. Very good message 8X10(3/5)- It's good but kinda boring. I dunno. It's just missing something. Rainbow (3.5/5)-This is a bonus track. Musically it's boring and languid. But I do enjoy the lyrics. They're very poetic and deep. All in all this is a very promising debut CD. Fefe Dobson is going to have longevity because she gives fans what they wanna hear. Great music. Avril has absolutely nothing on Fefe.

Fefe rocks, literally and figuratively!!!,

All I could say when I got the album the day it came out was, WOW! First, I didn't expect "Kiss Me Fool" to be on the album because MTV named it "Who Should I Be" on their site. So that was a pleasant surprise. It's now my favorite song from the album. Here's what I thought of all the songs. 1. Stupid Little Love Song. I had heard this on the internet about a month before the album came out, so I already knew I liked it. My favorite line is "Your brother is the scientist who found the cure for morning breath." My dad even likes this song! It really gets the album to a good start. 2. Bye Bye Boyfriend. Like the one above, I had already heard this song before. I thought it was very cool, and not your typical rant-about-a-bad-boyfriend-song. The video is good for this one too. 3. Take Me Away. I first saw this video way before i heard the song. I saw the video on Sep. 29, and i loved it from the start. Then, it got very popular around here, which was great. The lyrics don't exactly make sense, but they're kinda catchy. 4. Everything. This is Fefe's new single fyi. I really like it, it sounds different than the other songs, but that makes it even more enjoyable. You can still get good beats and guitars in it though! 5. Rock It Till You Drop It. It's very 80's sounding to me, but in a good way. It has a tendency to get stuck in your head, so beware! ha ha. 6. Revolution Song. Another sorta ballad-y song. It's not as hardcore as the other ones, but it still has that Fefe feel to it. 7. Kiss Me Fool. This is my favorite song on the album. It's very catchy lyrics got me the very first time i heard it back in September. "Kiss me fool, if you care, if your words have any meaning. Playing it cool is so unfair, why this veil of secrecy? God, forbid, your friends found out what we did. Why can't someone like you be with someone like me? Touch me fool if you're allowed. I'll be dancing in the corner. It's so cruel to play it proud. Take your hand and come with me. I'm aware, that all in love is fair, but that's no reason to make me feel this way" This is definetly one of those songs that you just have to turn up all the way. 8. Unforgiven. It's very loud and almost offending. Okay, maybe to Ms. Dobson's dad, but not to me. She's just basically yelling at her dad that all the stuff he did yesterday won't be fixed by saying "sorry" and that he's unforgiven for leaving her family. 9. We Went For A Ride. It's just about escaping with someone you love and not having to worry about going back. It's a sweet song, but it's not one of my favorites. It doesn't appeal to me like "Kiss Me Fool" does. 10. Give It Up. My friends and I spent about 2 hours trying to figure this song out. We decided (like one of the other posters) that it's about virginity, and how this guy wants to have sex and the girl isn't quite ready. "Give it up give it up, it's what they all say say, pressure from the boys to give it away. Suck it up suck it up don't treat me that way way, my heart will tell me when it's time to play." I like this song a lot because it's very relatable. 11. Julia. I have had a really hard time figuring out this song. At first i thought it was about a friend who was all sweet and happy and then kills herself, and then i read another review of it, and it made more sense. She's betraying herself and her friends, and that's why the lines "Her days were numbered" and " She couldn't be trusted" are in there. 12. 8 by 10 . It's very Beatles sounding to me. It's not all rockish like the other ones, but it's still a very nice, but different, song. I like it too, but it's not my first choice. 13.Rainbow. This is just a feel good song. Especially this line, "And if you could see, what others see, you wouldn't feel so bad." So when you're upset, it's a good song to listen to, but it's hidden, so you might miss it the first couple of times you look for it. Overall, this is probably tied for my favorite album. The other one being Stacie Orrico's, which is totally different. I have gotten all of my friends hooked on this album, and my dad too! I haven't been able to listen to a song without getting it stuck in my head, but sometimes, those are the best songs. Well, I hope yall like it as much as I do!

Fefe makes her mark,
By Sam (Houston, TX) - See all my reviews

Fefe Dobson may not be a household name, but this album gives her serious potential to do just that. With a fair amount of airplay and screentime with her first single "Take Me Away," the rest of the album doesn't fall short of what you may have expected. Before purchasing this album I had very well known she is compared to another "rock chick" named Avril Lavigne. I wasn't quick to put a label on her, so I decided to pick up the album in hopes the rest of the tracks would shine like the lead single. Boy was I in for a surprise. The ballads are superb and the rock tracks are very fun and uplifting. Fefe tells it how it is. She's real and edgy without being fake and "in your face". The first track to strike me in a remarkable way was the ballad "Julia." It is an amazing track. Miss Dobson's vocals are just perfect and the song is amazingly written. "8 x 10" is also a very original song that had a oldies vibe mixed with todays sound. My advice - pick this album up. Fefe easily outshines the slew of todays hottest artists. Not only does her album outshine the others, but her personality and style have potential to take her very far. I would pick her over Lavigne anyday.

A Kid's Review

This cd was released 2yrs ago but it still hasn't gone out of style! If anyone thought fefe would be a 1-hit-wonder they were WRONG! The 13 track album (15 for some) is a mix of hip fresh pop, teen angst, laid back toons, and is of course back by fefe's wonderful vocals.
the tracks are: 1.Stupid Little Love Song-Good way to start off the disc. Fast paced lyrical mayhem which gets the pace going. Sometimes hard to understand and could be better. 4/5 2.Bye Bye Boyfriend-First Canadian single (bad choice) back with an extremely unpopular video. I first heard this song on some radio station and i honestly thought that this was the strangest song i had ever heard and anyone who bought a cd from this freak was an idiot. Don't worry people i'm eating my words....3/5 3.Take Me Away-First international single. Dark video amazing lyrics, summer hit, definetly one of the best songs on the cd. 5/5 4.Everything-3rd single (2nd internationaly) backed up by a video sorta promoting "The Perfect Score" An ok song but stay away from the vid. 4/5 5.Rock It Til You Drop It-Starts off with some guy sorta grunting in the background. At first it annoyed me but it's grown on me. 3.5/5 6.Revolution Song-This song is fantastic! Very slow but the lyrics are awesome! She sings about breaking free of what she believes in. SHOULD HAVE BEEN A SINGLE 4.5/5 7.Kiss Me Fool-Another fav from Fefe. Up tempo, great beat. 5/5 8.Unforgiven-I know the whole thing about her dad leaving her and her mom but it's too different from the other songs. Doesn't fit on the album at all. I'll give it the points because it's very raw and filled with emotion. 2/5 9.We Went For A Ride-BEST SONG ON THE DISC!! so awesome! slow and dark, deep, amazing lyrics and voice on this. who cares if it's repetitive its sooooo great! 10/5 10.Give It Up-This song also tops the hit list! Talks about young love, almost like something she went thru (which she probly did) starts of slow but soon quikens into an awesome song! 5/5 11.Julia-a song about an old friend of fefe's. At first it was too different for me but now it's really good. Once again it's filled with emotion! 3.5/5 12.8x10-Official track list says this is the last song. It's slow and about fefe's secret celebrity crush! Funny at parts but overall good song. 4/5 13.Rainbow-Slow dreamy 2:00 song about god only knows what. Good way to end off the album in a calm way. 3.5/5 (Other Tracks) Don't Go-Fourth single from fefe. Techno 80's influence for sure! Not her greatest. can be found on reissue of this album. 3/5 Don't Let Me Fall-Never heard this song but can only assume it's good. -------- so thats it. its a great album which anyone who likes punk, pop, rock, jazz, disco should pick up. cant wait until Sunday Love-Oct.25/2005. First single Don't Let It Go To Your Head kiks @$$

I heard the single "take me away" and decided to get this album, simply because it was only 6.99 at Best Buy the first week. I was so completely surprised at how much I liked this CD that I bought some more for my friends. They thought I was crazy, judging by the cover of this album (she looks like a wannabe Avril), but it grew on them too. This album was in heavy rotation for a few weeks there, I kept trying to listen to something new but would always put it back on. My favorite track is hands down the very last one, that's not listed on the track list (i'm not sure what the title is). 'Everything' is also an awesome one. Honestly there are only a couple songs on this that I don't love. Most of them I will repeat over and over again. Don't ask me why.. My other favorites: jason mraz, beyonce, mya, audioslave, tlc.

What an increible talent Fefe is...,
By Buddhaful (MI) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Fefe Dobson (Audio CD)
This album is a big step up from the tunes she used to croon on her karaoke machine as a child. That machine soon turned to a studio for Fefe as she is vamped out with this new batch of studio cuts. Not putting on a bland yet marketable hit to explode then get to the good stuff was key for Fefe making her much more authentic than her comparably colleagues. She shows a surprising amount of grit and drive behind her songs, "Bye Bye Boyfriend" plays eerie till she busts out during the chorus. Her songs are alluring with their lyrics having an almost smokescreen sense (listen to Take Me Away, Julia, and 8x10 together and make your own assumptions to what I'm getting at) Her most memorable song on the album, is the ethereal "Everything". It literally feels as if she was ripped out of a moment to break out this song, something fellow Canadian Alanis Morissette does well. But Fefe hasn't experienced everything at the tender age of 18, so trading shortage of inspiration for novelty is both a strength and a weakness for Fefe. "Stupid Little Love Song" is raw punk that sounds so Blink 182-ish, a law suit might be in the mail. But at least she didn't push a dry, love-is-woe ballad at us in hopes of filling the tracks up easily. Fefe is certainly one of my top 5 favorite new artists to come out of 2003, and I hope she finds even more luck in 2004. See? Teen angst doesn't have to be bland, it can actually be genuine and music to your ears. |
