I bought this unit at Walgreens for my elderly mother and it has already paid huge dividends. It provides a bright yet not intrusive night light and has automatically come on during several power outages, which are common in the Caribbean. The unit switch must be in the 'ON' position in order for the batteries to take over. This product is a must-have. Get more than one.

The unit works well, and as long as you place the unit in the "on" position, it does what it is supposed to do. I have had a power failure with this light installed - so I know it works.

The thing is - the nightlight and the "flashlight" are very dim and do not generate much light at all. The night light is more of a beacon light and will just help you find your way to it. The light simply gets brighter during a power failure - or if you were to unplug it from the wall.

The light generated from this unit is just enough to get you around the area - but only in total darkness, if there is just a little bit of light - a time you would like to have some more light, but not total darkness - this light won't cut it.

It might be OK to keep you from running into the kitchen island, or a chair if it is very dark, but it really won't work, or can't be used a flashlight to find items or to really get you around the house.

If you need a very small basic light to help you locate the kids or find the other "real" flashlight - then this unit should fit the bill. If you are considering a few of these for your home - my recommendation is to buy a few different kinds (or 1 of these max) to try before you really need them ....

This unit works as advertised but gives the least light of the three.
I recommend checking out other brands.

I bought the item at a local drug store cause I needed a nightlight and figured a backup light would be great too. Well it works fine as a nightlight. But the first time we lost power the unit failed to turn on leaving us completely in the dark to find a flashlight. There's a switch to turn on or off the back up light. But the unit simply didn't not work without power.
