Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Grade 3-5-Nine-year-old Ned Feldman is left home alone while his parents go to see some professional wrestling matches. When he hears a noise in the kitchen, he discovers a spacecraft that looks just like the kitchen sink. Aboard the spacecraft is Captain Lumpy Lugo, a.k.a. Bugbeard the Pirate. Bugbeard whisks his new friend off into space, where they encounter giant space chickens, warm snow, and a yeti. Things move rather quickly in this short chapter book, and the boy is soon back home telling his parents all about his great adventure. Ned and the cowardly Bugbeard are appealing and amusing characters. The watercolor illustrations, in color and black and white, add to the fun. Pinkwater's unique brand of humor is evident throughout. Reluctant readers will pounce on this title, as will those children looking for a skinny chapter book for a report.

From Booklist

Gr. 3-5. This comical book represents science fiction in one of its milder forms. When nine-year-old Ned Feldman investigates a noise coming from the kitchen sink, he discovers Captain Bugbeard (alias Lumpy Lugo), a space pirate. Not your typical alien, Lugo is a testy little green man who wears an eye patch, flies the Jolly Roger, and sleeps with a teddy bear. He takes Ned adventuring on a strange planet inhabited by giant space chickens and an aggressive yeti, but they return home safely. Cartoonlike marker drawings, some in vivid colors, appear throughout the book. Pinkwater fans will enjoy the zany author/illustrator's latest trip into the light fantastic. Carolyn Phelan

5.0 out of 5 stars Stumbled across this fantastic book; now it's a family favorite!, December 8, 2010
This review is from: Ned Feldman, Space Pirate (Hardcover)
We stumbled across this book in a library sale, and all three of my kids and I giggled while reading this book from start to finish! We loved it so much, I loaned it to my son's 2nd grade teacher to read to to the class. She told me at the end of the year it was the class' hands-down favorite. I'm now buying a used copy (sadly it is out of print)for my nephew who is approaching the right age and can't grow up missing this book! Delightful!

4.0 out of 5 stars A great book for boys, June 15, 2000

Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Ned Feldman, Space Pirate (Hardcover)
This is a funny book that both parents and kids will enjoy - the humor is very sophisticated. I use it with kids who are reluctant readers and the silly storyline really hooks them. It's a nice alternative to books like Captain Underpants, because the book is funny without being mean. Captain Underpants has it's place (the kids love these books), but it's nice to find a book with similar appeal that isn't so anti-school!
