Perfect Books for Girls Of All Ages,
By Elizabeth Cole "Elizabeth Cole" (Willamsberg) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Felicity's Story Collection with Other (American Girl) (Hardcover)
The Felcity book series is very interesting and fun. In this book Felcity Merriman is a spunky and independant girl growing up in the 1770`s. In the first book Felcity must rescue a copper colored mare named Penny who is being badly abused by her owner Jiggy Nye. In the second book Felcity`s parents send her to manner lessons where she must learn to be a proper lady even though she would rather be riding side saddle atop a horse. In the 3rd book Felcity`s mother is ill and Felcity is invited to a fancy ball. It is also Christmas time and everyone if hoping for a Christmas miracle for Felcity`s mother to live. In the 4th book it`s time for Felcity`s birthday and her grandfather comes to visit and gives her a beautiful guitar and a sweet lamb named Posie. Then the guitar is ruined because Felcity left it in the rain for sure everyone will be mad. She hopes her grandfather will still trust her though. Will he or will he not? In the fifth bookw hich is my favorate Felcity`s father`s apperentice "Ben" has run away to join the army which breaks the contract between Felcity`s Father. When Felcity finds Ben he`s injured and Felcity must do what`s right to help. In the last book which is the sixth Felicity`s has her horse Penny back now and now Penny is pregnant with a foal then Penny`s labor turns for the worst. In the end Felcity must consult her old enemy,Jiggy Nye to help save her. You`ll really enjoy this series so please check it out!

Superb collection of the six volume stories about Felicity, the young woman from Williamsburg Virginia in the 1770s. Wonderful to have a single hardcover volume with all the stories. Very good pricing, especially at Amazon. However, you should know that the historical sections found at the end of each of the six stories in the bookset are not included in this volume. Only one historical section is at the very end. Still excellent and super value. A book to be treasured!

I stumbled across this series when trying to prepare my daughters for a trip to Williamsburg, VA. Aware of the dolls, I assumed that the writing would be bland, long advertisement for the dolls, but I was mistaken. Ms.Tripp does an admirable job creating a charming character in a world rich with interesting detail that captured and held the interest of my 8 and 10 year old girls, while interesting them into the culture that existed at the time. My girls were thrilled to tour Williamsburg after reading about it. It made the experience real for them. My only hesitation is that in several of the stories, Felicity sneaks out and runs away from home for various reasons, and I am wary of that dangerous example for my daughters. I recommend that you read and discuss with your daughters.

I bought this book for my 7 year old daughter. She loved reading it and didn't want to put it down. I like it because it was easy for her to read, but not too easy, and it included some character lessons and a little history.

This review is from: Felicity's Story Collection (American Girl) (Hardcover)
This collection is no exception to the wonderful stories and characters created by American Girl. I would highly recommend it to my cousins who are young enough to be my daughters as well as older people who are young at heart and love historical fiction. Starting in 1774, we follow nine year old Felicity Merriman, her family, her friends, and their neighbors through a pivotal period in American history, just before the Colonies started their fight for independence from British rule. Instead of being a one-sided account of pro-independence Colonists, we see the point of view of Loyalists as well, including Felicity's grandfather and her best friend Elizabeth. We also see Felicity growing and maturing over the course of the series, going from an impatient and impetuous girl to a more mature and thoughtful person starting to become a young woman. She's not perfect, but who really wants or expects his or her book characters to be perfect? Some reviewers have complained that she disobeys her parents and that that makes her a horrible character and poor role model, which is just ridiculous. Felicity sneaks out to see a horse, takes her late grandmother's guitar out to show off at her lesson, and sneaks out to help her family's runaway apprentice Ben when his leg is broken. That seems to be the extent of her so-called "misbehavior," as far as I can remember. Those things are normal for a child her age, and there's a huge difference between that and truly cruel and mean-spirited behavior like beating one's siblings, burning down a house, or stealing money from one's parents. If Felicity were such a horrible character and poor role model, then why does she sacrifice her time to take care of her very sick mother, treat her grandfather with such respect, treat her younger siblings so well, and risk negative consequences to do the right thing in many instances?
In addition to following this charming young girl and her family over the course of this series, we're also treated to a picture of a long-vanished world, when people lived a slower-paced life, such as using horses to get around, hand-sewing their own clothes, having the time to ceremonially serve tea, grew their own food, and managed to entertain themselves without computer games or electronic toys. All in all, it's a lovely series to share with young girls, and full of positive behavior and themes.

The American Revolution from a New Point of View,
By
This review is from: Felicity's Story Collection with Other (American Girl) (Hardcover)
These stories follow a young girl thought the times leading up to the American Revolution. It was so much more accessible to me (when I read it as a young girl myself, 15 years ago) than text books or those books that follow the stories of the historical figures of the time. If you have a young girl who loves history, or just a good story, these books are for her!
