Editorial Reviews

Felipe Esparza is best known for his raw, real-life comedy that audiences everywhere can relate to. In They're Not Going Laugh At You, this wild-haired funnyman takes you on an unforgettable comedic journey through topics like Latino stereotypes, ('We are not all hard workers') and illegal immigrants in Minnesota ('If you made it that far you can stay') that will have you in stitches from the moment he hits the stage.

I understand that comedy is subjective. Along with music, it is one of the harder categories of entertainment to judge because, oftentimes, it just comes down to a matter of taste. But comedy DVDs have an additional stigma that other DVD choices don't face. They have less replay value. If you are a fan of a particular comedian and you follow them, you have to expect that you will hear some material that they've used successfully in the past. The most common complaint I see leveled at comedy DVDs are that the jokes aren't fresh. That's right, folks--every time a comedian steps up to the stage, his entire act isn't going to be newly devised and original. And if you were going to tape a show for the general public to buy, wouldn't you use jokes and material that have proven popular and successful? I would!

That said, I'm a fan of comedian Felipe Esparza from when he won his season on "Last Comic Standing" years ago. If you are familiar with Esparza, then his choice of subject matter on this concert performance from Glendale, CA will come as no big surprise. Capitalizing on his persona as a heavy set, self-deprecating gentleman of Mexican descent--there is no shortage of intimate material for Esparza to explore in his very solid and amusing set. One of the things I like about Esparza is that he is really the punchline of many of his own jokes. He doesn't often make fun of others, but he is absolutely merciless when happily targeting himself as every conceivable stereotype in order to elicit laughter. The jokes here (with a little latitude) seem to center around his heritage, his weight, and his physical appearance. In short, he scores laugh-out-loud moments by essentially calling himself a fat ugly Mexican. Hey, I didn't say it! He does.

Oftentimes in these hour-long concerts, a comedian will start strong but become less consistent as the program progresses. I won't necessarily say that this is the funniest I have ever seen him, I've seen him even wilder. But he maintains a steady and funny hour that doesn't slow down. Being familiar with Esparza, I easily recognized some of the jokes and the recurrent themes, but as I said earlier--that's to be expected. But, for my money, Esparza should be a bigger and more recognizable name. If you aren't familiar with him, give him a try. KGHarris, 1/12.

5.0 out of 5 stars Hella funny! January 24, 2012
This guy brings some real-life jokes to the stage!
He reminds me a little of George Lopez as he animates and imitates some of the cultural traditions of being Mexican.
But he is definitely no George Lopez knock-off...He adds a unique spin to his stand up - keeping it real and hella funny.
Luv it!
