Works well if your plants survive initial placement,

The Topsy Turvy Hot Pepper Planter is very cool. It's the perfect option for those who wish to grow peppers without having an entire garden. I planted hot banana pepper plants in mine several weeks ago and mine still look very healthy and they are continuing to grow quite well.
However, it was rather difficult to get the new plants into the contraption without damaging them. You are supposed to squeeze them through the holes and anchor them in place and then fill the rest of the container with potting soil. I purchased the smallest plants that I could find at my local home improvement store but they were still too big to easily fit into the Topsy Turvy. I was forced to rip off some of the root and dirt and really squeeze them inside. I am surprised that they have survived considering the trauma that I probably put them through. It would be nice if there was an easier way to do this. I think next year I will grow my own plants from seed and then move them to the Topsy Turvy when they are much smaller. I would also be sure to water it every day that it doesn't rain otherwise it will dry up and your plants will die.

Picked up one of these at my local department store. The unit itself has 7 ports for plants. Although its designed for hot pepper plants you can also grow other things such as smaller tomato plants and herbs. I currently have Tobasco Peppers, Jalapenos, Cayane Peppers, Sweet Basil, Curled Parsley, Cilantro, and Cherry Tomatoes. Cost me about $22 in total for all of the plants.
Theres not a lot of room to maneuver inside once you get some plants in. I agree with one of the reviewers that the hardest part of this unit is putting the plants through the holes. I actually almost ruined a few plants putting it in and I'm very careful. I also agree that its best to select smaller plants for this unit. Don't worry, they'll grow fast once things get going. If you plan on using this with a Shepard Hook, buy an S clip as this unit does not come with one. It does however come with 1 hook which screws into wood. You need to drill a pilot hole in the wood to install the hook.

I did what the box said and it works.
I love sitting on my deck and watching my pepper's grow. I loved it so much that I got 10 of them and started planting different vegetables. I even gave some away as gifts now my whole family has them.

Easy and effective,
I used the Topsy Turvy to grow jalapenos and hot banana peppers last year and it went off without a hitch. The only mistake I made was not filling all of the holes with plants. This didn't negatively affect anything but I regretted not getting an even higher yield. I didn't have a problem fitting my plants in like the other reviewer. Overall it's a great product.

My niece and I got two of these. I used one for jalapenos and the other for Anaheim chilles.
It was a lot of fun. Like other reviewers have said, it is rather difficult to push the plants through the hole from the outside (roots/soil first) but found it much easier to do it from the inside, plant first. I like how they look and its great because there is no more room in my small herb/veggie garden on my patio. I've already made salsa and chile rellenos and both were amazing!

I purchased this to use for tomato plant but found out it dripped water on to the leaves when I watered the plant, which this type plant doesn't like. So I recommend buying it for lightweight plants that survive daily water dripped on the leaves.

Great success with the TT Pepper Planter,

I decided to try a garden on my apartment balcony this year and this little bad boy has been the highlight of it. I planted 4 jalapenos plants (2 to a port) 1 Hungarian black pepper, 1 bell, 1 Anaheim chili, and a Thai pepper with an empty port facing away from the sun. All are producing peppers and look to keep it up for a while. I liked it so much I bought 4 more on clearance to use next year.
When I planted them I squeezed the root mass into a squatty torpedo shape after removing them from their square nursery containers to get them through the ports. I loosened the root ball up a little once it was on the inside and packed new soil around it. The smaller 4 pack that the jalapenos came in were a lot easier than the 4 inch pots the rest came in, and they grew just fine, so I will try to stick with little plants next year. I planted some of the plants so that their stems were coming out of the ports at a 45 degree incline. Once they all started getting heavy with peppers those ones have held up while the others sag and twist. I water them daily and after a couple months started to fertilize every week or two when I remember. I also plan to stick with peppers jalapeno size or smaller next year. The Anaheim and bell pepper plants are weighing the container down on their side so I have to balance the Turvy out when I water it or all the water flows down that one side. I've had very little problem with pests, none with disease and the planter put a nice variety of peppers in the small groundless space I have outdoors. All and all I call it a success.
