Does Not Work!,
By They absolutely do not work, and there is a simple reason. By hanging the planter upside-down, water runs down the stem of the plant and collects right where the stem emerges from the planter. The stem ends up rotting from the pooling water, where in a normal planter it would go away from the plant and also feed the roots. The plants end up convoluted and congested as they try to turn upward toward the sun. Essentially, the plants try to grow up into themselves and turn into a nasty knot of tangled growth. The planter itself also shields the plant from the sun, particularly when the plant is young. I ended up hanging fishing weights from the ends of the branches to try to make them grow downward. Fruit was produced ultimately, but the fruits were undersized and subject to rotting from the water dripping down on them from above. I imagine the company that makes these would say I over-watered, but I adjusted the water as carefully as I could, and still you just can't keep water from dripping down and give the plant enough water. I mean think about it--the roots are where the water is leaving as it drains. I'm willing to bet the roots were a mess as they tried to grow downward to seek the water that destroyed the stem, branches and fruit. I would certainly not recommend these. If you're going to try them, try just one or two--don't bet your summer's veggies on them.

Hard to assemble and use,
By E. A. Lovitt "starmoth" (Gladwin, MI USA) - See all my reviews (HALL OF FAME REVIEWER) (TOP 100 REVIEWER) (REAL NAME) Another problem showed up when I was trying to fit my tomato plants through the portholes--the plastic ring that fits around the portholes is cheaply made and kept falling into two parts as I was trying to pass my tomato root balls through the ring. This was extremely frustrating. Finally, there is no way for water to escape from the plastic bag once you have watered your tomatoes. Watering has to be done very carefully to avoid rotting out the roots. Even cheap plastic pots from chain stores have drainage holes, so you'd think a relatively expensive product like this tomato tree would come equipped with them. No, it's 'poke your own.' I had assumed from looking at the Tomato Tree in the catalogue that the bag could be rotated, so different plants could get the most sun. Not so. You will have to rotate the whole unit in order to ensure that your tomato plants get equal time in the sun.
