Product Description

Just a few steps from your kitchen door, on a patio or deck, you can now plant three different tomato varieties. This tree of tomatoes will grow five feet in diameter, six foot high, and yield between 150 and 200 tomatoes (based on average yields). If you grow the cherry-type tomatoes, the yield will be hundreds and hundreds of delicious salad tomatoes. Mix and match tomatoes (for instance, one yellow, one red, one cherry size, etc.) You can even grow fresh herbs, zukes, eggplant or a variety of peppers.

1.0 out of 5 stars Does Not Work!, May 18, 2007
I bought 10 of these and even built a structure in my garden to hang them. I also set up automatic watering to them. I followed the instructions very carefully.

They absolutely do not work, and there is a simple reason.

By hanging the planter upside-down, water runs down the stem of the plant and collects right where the stem emerges from the planter. The stem ends up rotting from the pooling water, where in a normal planter it would go away from the plant and also feed the roots.

The plants end up convoluted and congested as they try to turn upward toward the sun. Essentially, the plants try to grow up into themselves and turn into a nasty knot of tangled growth. The planter itself also shields the plant from the sun, particularly when the plant is young.

I ended up hanging fishing weights from the ends of the branches to try to make them grow downward. Fruit was produced ultimately, but the fruits were undersized and subject to rotting from the water dripping down on them from above.

I imagine the company that makes these would say I over-watered, but I adjusted the water as carefully as I could, and still you just can't keep water from dripping down and give the plant enough water. I mean think about it--the roots are where the water is leaving as it drains. I'm willing to bet the roots were a mess as they tried to grow downward to seek the water that destroyed the stem, branches and fruit.

I would certainly not recommend these. If you're going to try them, try just one or two--don't bet your summer's veggies on them.

2.0 out of 5 stars Hard to assemble and use, June 9, 2007
The metal parts of the tomato tree are quite brittle, and even though we followed instructions and used a rubber mallet when fitting together the lower portion of the tree, a piece of metal broke away from the assembly holding the legs in place.

Another problem showed up when I was trying to fit my tomato plants through the portholes--the plastic ring that fits around the portholes is cheaply made and kept falling into two parts as I was trying to pass my tomato root balls through the ring. This was extremely frustrating.

Finally, there is no way for water to escape from the plastic bag once you have watered your tomatoes. Watering has to be done very carefully to avoid rotting out the roots. Even cheap plastic pots from chain stores have drainage holes, so you'd think a relatively expensive product like this tomato tree would come equipped with them. No, it's 'poke your own.'

I had assumed from looking at the Tomato Tree in the catalogue that the bag could be rotated, so different plants could get the most sun. Not so. You will have to rotate the whole unit in order to ensure that your tomato plants get equal time in the sun.

5.0 out of 5 stars topsy turvy tomatoe tree, March 26, 2010
This really does work great and will provide dozens of tomatoes of the variety you like. You must be sure to keep it watered. It will actually allow you to grow five plants- I use different varities for fun. Have not tried other vegetables but others should work. Only problem here in the Florida sun is that the bags rot after a maximum of two seasons. I ordered extras for about $10.00 including shipping. It does get top heavy but the stand has holes to bolt it down (and leveling screws, too) which you might need to do.
