Not bad..just know what you are getting into., February 13, 2004
This review is from: Fell in Love With a Boy (Audio CD)
Ok. The other two are entitled to their opinion about her being horrible or whatever but the fact is they just aren't of that vocal style or genre. Should she be on MTV? Probably not, but primarily because MTV does not normally promote any other genre's besides the default Rock, Rap, Pop, and R&B. If you love that older 70's kind of blues sound this would fit you perfectly. She is very talented for her age. Her songs range from the the slower type as "For the Love of You" to the more upbeat "Super Duper Love". So. In conclusion if you a type of person that expands their music collection for the love it, or are just a huge fan of that kind of 70's sound with the blues vocal style this is for you. If not you'll just have a view like the others who seemed to have focused on her single which generally isn't even the focus of the artist and is rather the record companies general song used to introduce an artist.

Soul Music, February 16, 2004
This review is from: Fell in Love With a Boy (Audio CD)
The Soul Sessions is essentially a live album. Almost all tracks were done in real-time recording, but enough about the recording process; it is the end product -- the luscious, beautifully done songs -- that is the essence of this album. Anyone with any interest in actually listening a great new voice (Stone) turn old classics/standards and improve upon them (and turn them into viable singles), and transform current songs (the White Stripes cover) into a new beasts. Stone's style makes any cover seem original. The White Stripes themselves cover old classics such as Death Letter by Son House, Leadbelly, Dylan, and Captain Beefheart to name a few, so no point in arguing coverage details. Joss Stone's album was not manufactured, it was recorded, and beautifully at that. She has potential, but what she does next is the true test. In the vain of great singers who started as cover artists (Jeff Buckley, Elisabeth Fraser, Sinead O'Connor), it is what they can do on their own that solidifies their stock as true musicians and not just a great sound. This album is great, the new tracks, especially the live cut, are chillingly good. Much love the Joss Stone and to everyone.

More R&B Thefts from Rock to pass it off as new, December 31, 2005
This review is from: Fell in Love With a Boy (Audio CD)
It's not enough that we listen to countless rappers steal lyrics, cords, and whole bars of rock to use in some studio designed crap that doesn't resemble the closest bit of musical talent, but now whole songs. The White Stripes make a point of playing raw original rock influenced by blues and even country while paying homage to the great rock of the past. Joss Stone emasculated the song, and twisted it into another cookie cutter Mariah Carey rip off to whine to. How many different sounds can we get out of her lungs and call it crooning...Wow, maybe if she played any of the music herself I could at least respect that, but like all R&B and rappers alike, that's just too much work. Steal it, that's the easy way out.
