A red indicator light alerts you to adjust the machine when it is not properly placed on the included heavy-duty waste stand and basket. The red light also comes on when the basket is full and needs to be emptied. The blade mechanism can be comfortably lifted and set aside for cleaning or paper removal.
With the main switch in the "on" position, the shredder uses its automatic start and stop feature: shredding is activated when paper touches a sensor on the blades, and it automatically stops when shredding is complete. The S40C employs a confetti cross-cut operation for greater security and waste reduction. This type of cut produces smaller pieces of paper but may also increase the risk of paper jams. To avoid a jam, empty the waste bin frequently. --Megan Dugan

Terrible, broke down after a couple of uses,

This review is from: Fellowes 30400 S40C 5-SHEET Shredder (Office Product)
The first time I used this shredder, I thought it was great. It cross-shredded documents into small, 2-inch strips. The third time I tried to use it, it stopped working. The gears would grind to a halt, and the shredder would apparently get stuck. I could reverse it and free the unshredded paper, but there would be little fragments of paper littering the floor. All the usual nontechnical fixes (unplugging and replugging, letting it cool down, etc.) failed to fix the problems. Maybe I got a lemon, but I would warn buyers to be careful and consider carefully if this is the shredder you want.

This shredder is not intended for continuous (more than sixty seconds' duration!) shredding, or even shredding more than a half dozen pieces of paper one at a time. Inexplicably, it turns itself off after the briefest and mildest of workouts, as if to cool down. It stands to reason that if you need a shredder, you need one that wants to shred. This is not the one. There is at least one other inexpensive shredder on the market that is up to the task of average home-office shredding.

I recieved the Fellowes S40C shredder for Christmas and have already used it to get rid of numerious pieces of printed paper, and checks that were sent by credit card companys. It has worked like a charm from start to finish. It is a little noisy but the cross cutt feature is well worth it. If you want a home shredder i would surely recommend it to anyone.
