Amazon Vine™ Review (What's this?)
Let me get one thing out of the way up front: Like so many products today, the instructions stink. The pictures have little detail to be able to distinguish just what you can expect to do. The written directions are vague. For example, you're told to "load the binding comb." Period. That's it. The black and white pictures gives no clue what a correctly loaded comb looks like, and the written instruction don't even give a hint how to orient the comb. But once passed that, the process went well.

My first project was a 125 page book, so I had to go to the store and buy some combs to use. The machine comes only with combs for smaller documents. The price of combs at office supply stores is not bad, just over a quarter a piece. If you sell your bound books, it won't add to the cost enough to affect your pricing.

The punching process is easy. The handle is sturdy, and unlike so many office products, doesn't feel fragile in use. Since it only punches 25 sheets at a time, doing the larger book was time consuming. You don't want to try and bind several dozen large documents minutes before the meeting.

But the machine is designed so the pages easily come out of the punch mechanism, lined up, ready to place on the open comb. Once the paper edge guide is set, the holes are perfectly aligned with no fuss. (Beware: The instructions don't tell you how to move the edge guide.)

It takes a couple of tries to determine what is the easiest way for each person to slide the pages onto the comb. Once you've established your style, the process is easy and goes quickly.

The storage drawer has a handy tool to measure your document to determine the correct size of comb. It's measured my document perfectly, and I appreciate not having to guess. One draw back to the drawer is no dividers to separate the combs by size, and it's too small to put the comb boxes in.

When working on a large project, the removal comb platform is a bonus feature. Two people can work together easily to punch and bind documents. The platform is easy to remove and replace. (Once again, the instructions don't tell you how to remove it. There's a pull-out release just above the comb opening handle.)

For me, a great feature is how easy it is to re-open the comb to make page corrections in the document. Slip it back into the machine, open the comb, add or replace pages where you need to, close the comb. Done. To replace pages that were inserted upside down took just a minute.

I've tried other binding systems, and this one will stay in my home office. The quality material and construction make it worth the price. Now if they will hire a writer for those instructions.

I'm in a bind-er December 13, 2011
Amazon Vine™ Review (What's this?)
I have always wondered how a booklet with a comb binder was made; now I know.

First I'll talk about the instructions. They leave a lot to be desired. I spent over an hour trying to figure out how to make a booklet with the first set of instructions. Fellowe supplies you with a binder starter kit which I recommend you use for your first project. The multipage instructions were very confusing for me, but fortunately the starter kit made the completion of my first booklet a bit easier. The multipage instructions turned out to be a great reference but not for the first time if you have never used this type of machine before.

The first thing in the instructions is selecting the comb diameter, which is in the storage tray underneath the machine. This is needed to determine what size of booklet you will make. The second thing is the punch profile for the sheets; 15, 20 or 21 holes. This was one of the parts that was very confusing to me because by moving the buttons on the upper right corner nothing seemed to change as far as punching holes in the paper. There was one setting that punched out a full page of holes, but left a blank spot 2/3 of the way down the paper. Third is back margin depth for the number of sheets. This is a button located on the right-hand side of the machine and switches to 1 to 150 sheets or 150 to 500. Forth you're told to insert the comb binder and that's where the confusion really starts. There is nothing telling you about putting the comb binder behind what I will call the metal picket fence, and making sure that the comb binder opens from the top. Knowing the size of the comb you can now move the lever that is located on the left side to the size of the comb. An example of this is if you have a 3/8 comb, pull the lever towards the front of the machine until you open the comb to the 3/8 mark which is inside the machine. Fifth, now it's time to punch the paper. This unit comes with a starter kit with all the comb binders being 19 holes. The kit includes five 1/4, ten 5/16, and five 3/8 inch combs binders, plus enough covers to make a number of booklets. Sixth is to test punch a piece of paper. In the left corner of the machine there is a thumbwheel that adjusts for the covers and the pages. I chose to do the covers first and then the pages, so the thumbwheel had to be set two times.

My first project was only 17 pages. So after punching the covers and then the pages I set the booklet in the comb binder, moved the level to the rear of the machine and viola, a booklet. If you are doing more than 25 pages, then I would recommend every time you punch out 25 pages set them onto the metal picket fence so the holes stay aligned. Of course, remember to put your front cover on first. After punching out the covers and the pages, I laid the complete booklet onto the comb binder, and then closed the lever. This worked for some pages but did not capture them all. Realizing I could add or delete pages from my booklet, I put the booklet back in the metal picket fence, opened up the comb binder, added the new pages, and this time I stood the pages upright and then closed the comb binder on to the pages which were aligned with the holes. This seemed to capture all the pages much easier than when I had first laid down the pages on the binder. Emptying the tray was a piece of cake. I guess if you make enough booklets or presentations you could have confetti for New Year's. :-)

When all else fails, supply a link. So here it is (...). Sometime reviews like instructions are hard to understand so I think along with the link and all the reviews for this machine it should make it quite easy to understand.

I'm not a businessperson, so this machine will be used seldom. But I do have a goal and that is to take some of my instructional books apart and comb bind them. This would give me the opportunity to lay them out flat rather than breaking the back of a book or trying to weigh down pages so that I can look at them. My opinion is that if I had a small business this would be in my office. This is a very sturdy machine and gives me the opinion that this will last for many many years. I have a lot of Fellowe products and they last for a long time. I would give this machine five stars, but unfortunately the instructions killed the last star.

Amazon Vine™ Review (What's this?)
When I received this Fellowes Galaxy Comb Binding Machine, I asked my secretary to put it through its paces. We stood it next to the powered binder we have in the office and tried several different booklets. We found that this machine is great for small runs. It is easy to use, instructions are easy to understand and even those who have a slight build are able to manipulate the handle to punch through all the sheets of paper with ease. It is bulky and you need a good solid stand to place it on, but the quality of this machine will remind you of products built years ago. I recommend this machine for anyone that doesn't do binding on a daily basis and has small amounts of booklets to produce. You will be overwhelmingly satisfied with this product.
