Sturdy Office Quality Machine,
By
This review is from: Fellowes Galaxy Comb Binding Machine (5218201) (Office Product)
Customer review from the Amazon Vine™ Program (What's this?)
Let me get one thing out of the way up front: Like so many products today, the instructions stink. The pictures have little detail to be able to distinguish just what you can expect to do. The written directions are vague. For example, you're told to "load the binding comb." Period. That's it. The black and white pictures gives no clue what a correctly loaded comb looks like, and the written instruction don't even give a hint how to orient the comb. But once passed that, the process went well.
My first project was a 125 page book, so I had to go to the store and buy some combs to use. The machine comes only with combs for smaller documents. The price of combs at office supply stores is not bad, just over a quarter a piece. If you sell your bound books, it won't add to the cost enough to affect your pricing. The punching process is easy. The handle is sturdy, and unlike so many office products, doesn't feel fragile in use. Since it only punches 25 sheets at a time, doing the larger book was time consuming. You don't want to try and bind several dozen large documents minutes before the meeting. But the machine is designed so the pages easily come out of the punch mechanism, lined up, ready to place on the open comb. Once the paper edge guide is set, the holes are perfectly aligned with no fuss. (Beware: The instructions don't tell you how to move the edge guide.) It takes a couple of tries to determine what is the easiest way for each person to slide the pages onto the comb. Once you've established your style, the process is easy and goes quickly. The storage drawer has a handy tool to measure your document to determine the correct size of comb. It's measured my document perfectly, and I appreciate not having to guess. One draw back to the drawer is no dividers to separate the combs by size, and it's too small to put the comb boxes in. When working on a large project, the removal comb platform is a bonus feature. Two people can work together easily to punch and bind documents. The platform is easy to remove and replace. (Once again, the instructions don't tell you how to remove it. There's a pull-out release just above the comb opening handle.) For me, a great feature is how easy it is to re-open the comb to make page corrections in the document. Slip it back into the machine, open the comb, add or replace pages where you need to, close the comb. Done. To replace pages that were inserted upside down took just a minute. I've tried other binding systems, and this one will stay in my home office. The quality material and construction make it worth the price. Now if they will hire a writer for those instructions.

This Comb makes binding a breeze!,

This review is from: Fellowes Galaxy Comb Binding Machine (5218201) (Office Product)
Customer review from the Amazon Vine™ Program (What's this?)
When I received this Fellowes Galaxy Comb Binding Machine, I asked my secretary to put it through its paces. We stood it next to the powered binder we have in the office and tried several different booklets. We found that this machine is great for small runs. It is easy to use, instructions are easy to understand and even those who have a slight build are able to manipulate the handle to punch through all the sheets of paper with ease. It is bulky and you need a good solid stand to place it on, but the quality of this machine will remind you of products built years ago. I recommend this machine for anyone that doesn't do binding on a daily basis and has small amounts of booklets to produce. You will be overwhelmingly satisfied with this product.

Sturdy Machine for Professional Looking Results,

This review is from: Fellowes Galaxy Comb Binding Machine (5218201) (Office Product)
Customer review from the Amazon Vine™ Program (What's this?)
After several months testing out this machine, I'll say that it took some warming up to, but it's been quite a workhorse. But let me back up and start at the beginning...When I first opened up the box and unpacked its contents, I was dumbstruck. It's intimidating and the instructions might well have been written in a dead foreign language for all their helpfulness. Since I do have some measure of patience and don't mind a little trial an error, it didn't take too long to figure out what went where and how. But I will say it's a good idea to have a few test booklets ready for mangling if you aren't familiar with this particular comb binder. I've done various projects ranging from 10 sheets to just under a hundred and this binder handled each of them like a champ. It should go without saying, though, that the smaller jobs (under 20 pages) were definitely the easiest. This binder can only punch about 25 sheets at a time, though I found its sweet spot to be about 20. The punch didn't feel flimsy--in fact, *nothing* about this machine feels flimsy--and punching the holes didn't require too much effort on my part. For the larger jobs, you'll need to develop a system to keep the pages aligned after they've been punched or it can become a challenge to get them all properly lined up later for the binding. However, once you find your groove, this is one sturdy and useful machine. And the results come out looking professional every time (save those first few trial and error bindings). I even did a side-by-side comparison of a booklet I had bound at a Kinko's and couldn't tell the difference. And months later, this machine is still going strong. I'll just finish up with a mention that this binder does have a large footprint and it's quite heavy, so make sure you have the proper space for it and that you don't plan to move it often.
