I bought this shredder because my previous one was difficult to empty and too small. I was also looking for something that was relatively easy to use, and didn't have too many buttons. I was very happy with how easy it was to set up, the fact that it does the confetti shredding, and that the paper basket is so easy to remove (and doesn't end up spilling the contents everywhere). When the wastebasket fills up,stepping on the flat silver bottom causes it to pop out, making for easy cleanup. The mesh design was another one of the reasons why I bought it, because it's easier to see when it is filling up. It's also much larger than other shredders of its kind, which makes it easier for those of us with back problems and other ailments in terms of cleaning and overall maintenance.

I have had this shredder for about a month and I haven't had any problems at all - I love it! I would highly recommend this shredder for someone who wants a no-nonsense, easy to use, relatively large shredder for a non-office environment.

This is an update from my previous post below:
I had been pretty happy with this shredder except that it died yesterday 7/27/2014, almost exactly two years after I bought it. I have no idea what happened. I am not a heavy user, and I oiled it regularly as recommended by the manufacturer.

The most disturbing part was when I typed in the CRC number on the Fellowes web-site, it does not register as a valid number!!! I am not even sure how to proceed to ask for repair.

I think for a product to stop working just after 2 years is unacceptable especially since I am not a heavy user.

I used to own an earlier version of the Fellowes shredder but it died on me a few weeks ago after 5 years.

This newer version is simply excellent (compared to the earlier version) for the following reasons:
1. Very easy to remove confetti cut with the pop out trash basket. (the earlier version requires the top to be removed before the trash can be emptied and always caused a mess!)
2. Very quiet when shredding
3. Nice clean shreds in a few seconds.
4. Able to take an entire envelope through the shredder without issues.
5. Affordable at $80

I am very happy with this shredder and glad that it is offered at Amazon!

I've had many shredders but I really like Fellowes. I had a Fellowes DM15C that just died on me. There was another shredder that was less expensive (also a Fellowes) but I decided to get this one as it had the same warranty as the DM15C. So far, I really like it. Something to remember. Don't buy a shredder that's more than you need and compare models and prices before you buy. Read the manual to find out exactly what you can or can't do plus how to operate the shredder. I've only shredded junk mail so far. I haven't shredded credit cards yet. The see through metal basket is nice to have because there's no guess work when you need to empty it. It doesn't leave a trail of shredded paper when you open it, either. The blades are protected with plastic so you can't cut your fingers which is a safety feature I can appreciate. The Ds1 is powerful and works quickly. I had some torn up pieces of mail with my address on them and the shredder only took a couple of minutes to chew it up. The pieces are small enough so that they can't be read. This is something I really care about as far as security is concerned. If you want a shredder for light duty get this one and don't forget to oil the blades regularly. I learned the hard way.

Overall this is a fairly good shredder, but a couple of things are not as advertised. First, it is NOT a confetti shredder - the shreds are actually pretty large for a crosscut. Second, it is very loud, actually the loudest shredder I've every owned. Third, only about 7 pages maximum can be inserted at one time. I am somewhat disappointed, but will keep it since it does meet my needs.

LAST ONE I HAD LASTED 5 YEARS BEFORE MOTOR SEIZED...DIED...WHATEVER...POSSIBLY MY FAULT FOR NOT OILING IT PER MFGR. INSTRUCTIONS...RECOMMEND USE VEGETABLE OIL PERIODICALLY ON THE CUTTERS...I USE ONLY THE BEST EVOO!! THE SEE-THRU MESH TILT-OUT[BY FOOT]BASKET GREAT FOR LARGER AND NON-SHREDDABLE ITEMS...EASY TO EMPTY...GOOD HAND HOLD GRIPS...HOLDS A LOT OF SHREDDED PAPER ESPECIALLY IF YOU PERIODICALLY OPEN BASKET AND CRAM PAPER CUTTINGS DOWN WITH OLD MAGAZINE, ETC. I SHRED A LOT EVERYDAY...CRAMMING DOWN PERMITS ME TO EMPTY BASKET ONLY ONCE A WEEK AT MOST...OFTEN UP TO 2 WEEKS! SEE-THRU LARGE CAPACITY MESH HEAVY DUTY METAL BASKET IS WORTH THE FIVE STARS BY ITSELF! WHEN MY OLD ONE DIED I THOUGHT I'D NEVER FIND ANOTHER REPLACEMENT...BUT GOOD OLD AMAZON CAME THRU AS USUAL WITH SUPER LOW PRICE [I PAID MORE FOR 1ST ONE AT SAM'S CLUB] AND FREE SHIPPING. WOULDN'T USE ANOTHER TYPE SHREDDER IF YOU GAVE IT TO ME! AMAZON RULES!

Over the years, I've owned several shredders. This one is by far the one I like best of the lot. On the functional side, the motor is strong and fast and the slot is plenty wide. As a previous poster noted, the shreddings aren't confetti-cut, just a smaller, finer version of crosscut. But it does a good job and the bits are small enough that I'm satisfied. You can shred credit cards in it, and staples won't hurt it. On the physical side, this is a really good looking unit. The basket is deep and tips out to empty easily. The shape and the black and silver finish are attractive. After I ordered it, I ordered the Fellowes Shredder Oil, 12 oz. Bottle with Extension Nozzle (35250). You might as well order it with the shredder; it's a good deal. I'm using this for home use only, so can't tell you how it holds up on heavier use, although the company does rate it for it. It also has safety shut-off features. All in all, I'm very pleased.
