The binder runs on person-power--no electricity required. You just slide your paper, up to five sheets at a time, into the punching area. Make sure the binding lock is all the way back. Once the paper is lined up properly, you just press down firmly on the punching handle, then lift up. If you've never used a binder before, we suggest experimenting with a few nonessential sheets first. Once your papers are punched, choose a binding comb. The size of the comb will depend on the thickness of your papers. This machine comes with 10 6-millimeter black combs, which are best for jobs of up to 20 sheets.
The combs can be a bit tricky and, unfortunately, Fellowes does not provide very clear directions or illustrations for their use (which we would have liked). However, after a few tries, we did manage to position the comb over the metal rakes correctly. We also noticed that unless you pull the punching handle back slowly on small combs, you run the risk of shooting the comb across the room. We had the best luck using one hand to pull back and open the comb's teeth and the other to position our documents over the open mouth. Then, we released the lever slowly and removed the newly bound sheets. After one binding, you'll understand the mechanics as well, and think of how impressed the boss will be when you come into your meeting with a stack of professional-looking bound reports. --Dana Van Nest
