Solidly constructed, the PB300 requires virtually no setup; just attach the two punching/binding handles to the machine using the screw provided. Two-handle operation increases efficient punch and binding coordination. Then, position the separate adjustable margin guide to ensure even alignment for letter-size and oversize documents. With a maximum 11-inch binding length, you can still bind larger documents by turning the short side to the punch.
All of the instructions fit on a single sheet of paper, so operation is easy to master. A small selection of the plastic binding combs are provided in different sizes. (You may want to order a supply when you order your unit so you can get straight to work.) Consider the advantages of comb binding--bound documents open flat for ease in reading or working, pages don't stick when turned, and being able to open 360 degrees aids in copying. Beyond documents, reports, and manuals, we enjoyed making calendars, blank books, and scrapbooks for the kids.
The PB300 is a good choice for a business or busy home office with substantial binding needs, since it's built with an eye towards heavy use and offers features beyond the needs of a casual user. Still, the PB300 handles small jobs well, and it's often beneficial to think long term when buying a piece of equipment. The PB300 is heavy and bulky, so you'll want to dedicate a corner of your office counter to it--or for smaller operations, set it up for big binding projects and then stow away when not in use. The unit's dimensions are 22 by 21 by 10 inches, and it weights nearly 40 pounds. It's covered by a limited one-year parts warranty with the exception of the punching dies, which are subject to wear. --Barbara Price
