Things to Consider Before Purchasing a Shredder:

Cut Type

With Identity Theft concerns at an all-time high, the need to protect personal information is more important than ever. And these days, it's no longer just what you shred that matters--it's how small you shred it. Shredders with a smaller cut size will help keep your information secure long after you dispose of the particles. The smaller the cut size, the higher the security level.

Ideal for: Non-confidential documentsIdeal for: Credit/College Applications, Insurance papers, Junk mailIdeal for: Medical Records, Employee/HR Files, Bank/Financial StatementsIdeal for: Top Secret or Classified Government Documents

If you shred confidential documents, choose Cross-Cut or smaller. A smaller cut size also means you will empty the bin less frequently.

Shredder productivity goes beyond mere sheet capacity or speed. When shopping for a shredder, consider the machine's throughput, or the efficiency with which it can get the job done. Throughput combines the three most critical features that contribute to a shredder's performance:

Sheet Capacity x Speed (feet per minute) x Duty Cycle = Throughput

For example, a shredder with a speed of 8.2 feet per minute (FPM), may seem more productive than one that shreds at only 7 FPM. After all, it's a faster machine! But as the example below illustrates, Shredder B is actually three times more productive than Shredder A, due to a longer duty cycle. This means you can get more done at one time, so you can quickly move on with your day.

ModelSheet CapacityxSpeedxDuty Cycle*=Throughput
Shredder A12x8.2 FPMx3 minutes=295
Shredder B15x7 FPMx10 minutes=1,050

Got this a replacement for our Fellowes Powershred W-11C 11 Sheet Cross-Cut Shredder (3103201) - which we really liked and received a 5 star review from me. This shredder, though twice the price, definitely lives up to the higher cost with better build quality, faster and more complete shredding, and ease of use.

- Handles everything I've thrown into it quickly, including multiple sheets of paper.
- The jam notification worked fine for me, letting me know that 12 pieces of paper was just too much - BEFORE it got bogged down.
- Child lockout is easy for adults to use, but would be very difficult for kids
- Can leave it on all the time, and just put stuff directly in to shred.
- The power cord is heavy duty, ~3 feet long, and feels substantial.
- Kills staples, paperboard, etc., with no challenge
- All metal shredding inside - no cheap plastic like others. We had one that was plastic everywhere, and it barely lasted a month. You get what you pay for.
- It's quiet. Very quiet compared to the W-11C - maybe 1/2 the volume when shredding. With a 6 month old in the house, quiet is good (when we can get it!)

- It can be difficult to get the container back into the machine after emptying. We have it on a tile surface and it's still difficult sometimes. Would be challenging on carpet.

This Fellowes replaces an older Aurora strip cut shredder (AS1200MSB), whose basket filled quite fast. I generally hold all of my shredding (receipts, shipping sheets, banking statements, credit card offers & their respective checks they try to get you to use) in a basket and shred after the paperwork starts piling above the basket (about 3" worth). With the strip cut, the basket filled very fast and had to be emptied frequently, I'd say about 6-7 times with my 3" pile. With this cross-cut, I've only done a little more than 2" of paperwork and have only emptied it twice, and both times the basket wasn't packed full.
The shredder itself is a lot heavier than the Aurora, and a few inches wider (also, odder shaped; wider up front & thinner down back, unlike the rectangular Aurora). I have encountered 2 instances where the JAM INDICATOR light had lit. I personally didn't think they were too thick, but I reversed it out of the shredder, and tore into 2 pieces to reshred.

Credit cards shredded perfectly, although I think I'd prefer to dice them up angled rather than straight in. I could still read my full name on some of the shreddings.

To test their claims, I took 9 pieces of Staples Multipurpose Paper (20lb) from the ream, unprinted, and halfway through, the JAM INDICATOR light had lit and the shredder stopped. Copy paper is relatively thinner than the bank statements & sensitive "junk" mail I receive, so I don't see 9 being plausible, unless it's really thin paper. I had to work at getting those jammed sheets out while reversing, they were really in their tightly.

The basket opens easily, but if you have the shredder on a carpet, it doesn't go back in easily without a little adjusting.

This is a nice shredder for day-to-day shredding with several nice safety features. Although it says it has a 9 sheet capacity, I don't think I'd push it that far. (We have a Fellowes W-11C Fellowes Powershred W-11C 11 Sheet Cross-Cut Shredder (3103201), which seems a bit faster and able to more easily handle a few more sheets at a time.)

This shredder has a safety switch that you can slide into a locking position, which would be useful to those with a child in the house. It can handle credit cards and there is a diagram along the slot to insert material to show you where to insert them.

The thing I like best about this shredder is that the container that collects the shredded material easily slides out for emptying. You had to remove the top of all our past shredders to empty the collection bin, which often created a mess from whatever paper was still caught up in the shredding mechanism. This has caused much less mess, a well as requiring far less strength for the task or risk of damaging the mechanism.

Overall, I like this shredder and would recommend it to anyone who has an average volume of material for shredding. I don't know that it would be up to the job of heavy-duty daily use unless you have the patience to insert only a few pages at a time. I haven't had it long enough to know if it will hold up for long-term daily use, but it seems sturdy enough for the job to go a long while.

Update of 4/8/2013 - I have to amend this review to say that the drawer collection has proven to be even more of a mess than the shredders that you sit atop the trash can.

The Fellowes Powershred 59Cb Shredder arrived promptly and well packaged.

After removing it from the box and lubricating with Fellowes performance oil from Amazon it went to work munching clutter. It reduces various size documents into tiny strips without hesitation.

In our view nine sheets is overly optimistic. We found three to five sheets work well without complaints or a paper jam. Like most shredders the receptacle can be messy if overfilled. Save yourself a cleanup job watch the clear window in the front.

The machine is wider in the front. However, it still fits neatly under a desk. Of course it is slid out for shredding or emptying the receptacle.
