It's odd to call a product intended for use in an office "beautiful", but the Fellowes Quasar 500 comb binding machine certainly is. It is immediately reminiscent of the heyday of Raymond Lowey, a brilliant industrial designer whose work spanned the first seven decades of the 20th Century. Lowey, in fact, was the first and probably the only industrial designer to be become the subject of a Time Magazine cover.

The smooth flowing lines of the Quasar 500 all lead to functionality.

You open the cover, withdraw a plastic comb from the drawer beneath the unit (which includes a handy measuring device), place the comb on the machine, open it using a side lever, drop up to 20 pages in a vertical slot, punch them using the relatively massive handle that makes the task easier, slide the pages on the comb and repeat until done. When done, you have a book, cleanly bound with a plastic comb.

The machine is ready to work within minutes of taking it out of the box. The instructions - about a dozen clear drawings with captions - take a minute or two to read. And then you're ready to bind.

Though it is a beautiful piece of design, there is nothing delicate about this machine. Everything about it bespeaks a satisfying (to me) ruggedness. It is heavy, which is somewhat inconvenient since I have to return it to the box after every use and take it out when I need it again. It is large - and, like me, I suspect a lot of people are going to encounter space problems. But it feels like it will last a million years. The handle that spreads the combs has a satisfying firm feel to it, though its operation is very smooth. The handle used to punch the paper benefits from its large size by making punching the 20 pages you can load like taking a hot knife to butter. (Don't try to punch more than 20 pages!)

I'm in the technology business and reading massive manuals (400+ pages) is the norm for me. Publishers no longer ship printed manuals with their products, so until now I've had them bound, if not printed, at the local office services shop. This usually required two trips: one to drop it off, one to pick it up. No more. I bound a 398 page manual tonight on my kitchen counter in about 15 minutes. No muss, no fuss.

This won't be a high-volume device for me, though the unit is certainly capable of constant use, but it is a valuable and much appreciated office tool. Simple to use, manufactured for a long life of use and beautifully designed.

When I received this machine a few weeks ago, I could hardly wait to try it!

Five years ago, my sister and I self-published a family cookbook. We wanted the cookbooks to look professionally done so we bought a small comb binder. We made 100 cookbooks. It was a slow process. It would have been much easier and quicker if we'd had this machine.

I tested this machine by punching and binding a collection of business papers and articles I had in a folder. The machine takes very little effort to punch up to 20 sheets at a time. I had 300 pages in my project. Binding them was easy. I believe this machine would have no problem handling a project with up to 500 pages. That's a full ream of paper! The handle mechanism for punching the paper is very comfortable so your hands won't tire easily. I also like the style of the binding machine. It's compact enough to easily store when not in use.

I highly recommend this machine for businesses, homemakers, entrepreneurs, students, teachers - anyone who wants to prepare and present professional products.
