A great study guide!,
This review is from: The Fellowship of the Ring Study Guide (Paperback)
I really like Progeny Press. It gives you the flexibility to use what you need from the study guide. You can use just parts or all of the study guide depending on what kind of depth you want your students to study the literature; it is your choice. "The Fellowship of the Ring" is one of my favorite books but can be confusing and hard to read through without a guide. The guide helps the student dig and look for what is important without me, the teacher, giving them the answers. This encourages your student to explore and discover, and I have found it helps them use their critical thinking skills. Many in my class have caught the 'Tolkein bug' and read the second and third books in the trilogy.
The guide has many levels of thinking and exploration activities. There are concept questions, anaylsis questions, pre-reading activities, vocabulary exercises, discussion questions, optional activities, essay question ideas, and "Dig Deeper" questions. If you are in a public school, this will be important. The dig deeper questions bring in Christian scripture references and guides the student to relate to the characters within a Christian view by asking students to analyze what a character is doing or saying. Tolkien writes from a Christian World view and there are many thought provoking questions in this area. Again, this part of the guide can be used or ignored; it's your preference. You don't copy this section for your student if not wanted. Another important feature is all of the pages are reproducible and you have copying rights for your individual classroom or home. (Note: not copying rights for multiple teachers.) This makes it affordable for a classroom project.

Not appropriate for public school,

This review is from: The Fellowship of the Ring Study Guide (Paperback)
This "study guide" is, first of all, only a collection of papers with a paper folder to put them in. Not remotely worth the cost!
Secondly, it views the book from a scriptural standpoint, asking students to read passages from the Bible to compare to passages from the book, etc. Not for use in public schools, unless you want a lawsuit. Overall, this is a rip-off! I immediately retuned mine after I looked through it. |
