2.0 out of 5 stars Great material on reading CXRs--bad material construction of book, July 30, 2008
This review is from: Felson's Principles of Chest Roentgenology Text with CD-ROM, 3e (Goodman, Felson's Principles of Chest Roentgenology) (Paperback)
If you are beginning to learn to read chest x-rays, this is the book to read. But is this a book you should buy? . This book will give you a step-by-step approach to reading chest x-rays. By the time you finish reading it, you'll be able to differentiate consolidation from atelectasis and be able to locate the lesions in the correct lung lobes. You'll know the difference between an air bronchogram and a silhouette sign, confidently read a pneumothorax, and know when to use a CT, MRI, or CXR. For beginners, this is the best book with which to start. I should know. I own five introductory books on radiology and this is the one I recommend everyone should read. It only covers reading chest x-rays, but once you've mastered the material in the book, you'll be much more confident going on to other radiology books that cover other parts of the body. Of course, they don't cover everything in this book. You won't be reading fractured thoracic vertebrae or ribs, but what is covered in the book is very good.

The quality of the black and white photographs of the radiographs is very good. When they tell you you can see a mass or fissure in the X-ray, it is indeed viewable. In some other books the quality of the photographic reproductions aren't as good.

Now, I will tell you the downside of the book. The binding is bad. It's both a bad design and poor manufacturing. Within a few minutes of removing the plastic wrap that covered the new book and actually using the book, pages were beginning to come out of the binding. In less than one day of use, the binding was totally detached from the bulk of the book. Only a few pages near the beginning and end of the book were still attached to the book's cover.

I complained to the publisher, Elsevier, but in order to get a new book, I would have to return the damaged book that included all my handwritten notes to myself in the margins.

Be forewarned. The contents of the book are great. The quality of the material of the book is poor.

Other books I like very much include the following:

Pocket Atlas of Sectional Anatomy Volume I, II, III (Publisher Thieme)
Great books to learn cross-sectional anatomy of MRIs. No pathology is included.

Squire's Fundamentals of Radiology 6th Ed

5.0 out of 5 stars The best resource I've found to learn how to read chest films, May 6, 2007
This review is from: Felson's Principles of Chest Roentgenology Text with CD-ROM, 3e (Goodman, Felson's Principles of Chest Roentgenology) (Paperback)
As a third year medical student I've read many radiology books trying to learn how to quickly and accurately read chest films. This is the best resource I've found so far! I've read this book cover to cover three times (read the 2nd edition once, this new 3rd edition twice) and I've been able to quickly read PA and lateral chest films accurately as competently as any intern or resident. Although the book also teaches how to read a chest CT, its strength lies in teaching how to identify and localize chest pathology in either portable chest films, or PA and lateral films.

This new edition is somewhat shorter than the previous one because there's one chapter ("segmental anatomy") that has been put on the CD. In addition to that chapter, the CD also has additional chapters, exercises and films to read that do not appear in previous editions.

If you're looking for a fun, quick way to learn how to correctly identify common lung pathology on a chest film, this book is the best way to start. It will not make you an expert radiologist, but as a 3rd year med student the knowledge I've gained from this book is simply invaluable.

This book does a great job of explaining the basics. It is easy to read and interactive. A must for anyone beginning a chest x-ray class.
