This review is from: Red Gold DVD (Misc.)
Red Gold is one of those rare movies that tackles some of the fundamental questions in our society. How a bunch of fish bums came upon that age old question of "what is value?" or "what is aesthetic beauty and how do we assign worth to it?" is truly beyond me. But it's impressive.
The Bristol Bay Pebble Mine contains the largest deposit of copper ever discovered in the United States. It also just so happens to sit on the headwaters of the two largest sockeye salmon runs LEFT in the world (notice LEFT; I wont even begin to go into all the watersheds we have already destroyed). A salmon run that native people have been depending upon for thousands of years. And ironically, the natives of the pacific northwest created a 'gift economy', the only one of its kinds, around the life cycles of the salmon. The fundamentals of value are consistently called into questions with the miners relying on economic arguments for the development of the mine. On the other hand, commercial and sport fisherman protest that a fishery like this is invaluable in the long run and short term economic thinking will only ruin the fishery for generations to come. Check it out. Did I mention that it's beautifully shot as well? Nice job Felt Soul, nice job.
