Felt does it again with A Tribute to Rosie Perez,
This review is from: FELT 3: A Tribute to Rosie Perez (Audio CD)
Felt 3: A tribute to Rosie Perez is the long awaited third release from hip hop duo Felt, consisting of Slug (Atmoshpere) and Murs(Living Legends/solo career). This time around, with Aesop Rock handling the production, Felt has produced another fantastic album that is lyrically complex, musically engaging, and ultimately more accessible than the last two chapters in the Felt saga.
The album starts off strong and heavy with the track "Protagonists", which is reminiscent of the openers from the last two albums, "The Two" and "Employees of the Year". Murs and Slug explain who they are and the album continues on with the same energetic tone. From the almost gangster feel of the song "Bass For Your Truck", to the haunting beat of "Ghost Dance Deluxe", the body of the album is easy to listen to without skipping a track. Another standout track is "Deathmurdermayhem", which features a verse previously used by Slug in live performances of "Gaurantees". It is also worth mentioning that this album has more content and offers more diversity than seen on the last Felt releases, and as a consequence I think the average listener will be able to find something they like within it. Fans of Aesop Rock's beats, the lyrical stylings of Slug and Murs, or simply lovers of hip hop will not be disappointed in this CD.

I got this album as a compulsory show-love purchase (no disrespect guys) to bump as an anticipated release from the first two project albums from Murs and Slug (much love). The first two times I tried to listen to this album, I dismissed it because I wasnt ready to hear it and was expecting it to sound like something else (hey we all get stuck). When I finally guilted myself (slimy almost)to listen to it, I was absolutelly blown away and smiled for days like I just boned the untouchable hottie on the block. Aes rock's production is proper mad science that you did not think you would love (i know i didn't), the rock-funk fusion vegas style buffet and some dnb breaks are pure genius. The three have a great alchemical dynamic which makes this album beyond bumpable as it is impossable for me not to hear it front to back less than twice a day. Keep it coming guys, thanks for broadening my horizons,...again.

Spectacular CD, and buy the CD suckas(for the torrent herbs),cuz like many of us slug got a kid to feed too! So this disc kicks off with some solid production by senor Aesop and holds solid to the very end, I spun this straight through as soon as I got it, no skips, no dull moments. The beats and samples range from moody cemetery rompin to Southside sub pound'n @4am down 47th and Halsted. Slug and Murs flow on tracks like a carpet foating down the sky, cats live in symbiotic harmony with the music, cop't.

Good album, maybe even a great album, but overall it just doesn't compare to Felt or Felt 2. I felt going with Aesop Rock was one of the worst decisions Slug and Murs could have made. Long before the album was released, I heard Aesop Rock was producing the album and the news gave me mixed emotions, all of them relatively negative. I feel there is too much going on during the beats and some lack personality. I'll listen to a song on Felt 3, and think to myself "this song/measure would have been perfect with/without _____". With Felt and Felt 2, I don't get that feeling. I find myself skipping over tracks during Felt 3, and I'm not only referring to filler tracks like "Get Cake". There are a few amazing tracks on the album, but overall, I'd give the album a B+ at best. The lyrics however are still top notch, mostly. I really can't get enough of Murs and Slug, they're two of the most amazing in the business, but Felt 3 was just a let down. I wasn't surprised to find myself listening to Felt and Felt 2 shortly after listening to Felt 3 a few times.
One last thing, what the hell is up with having twenty tracks?

Murs and Slug are two of the most talented rappers ever. This saves the album. Every time I've seen Murs on the street, I gush on and on about how amazing Felt 1 & Felt 2 are and how those albums changed hip-hop. I wish I could do the same for Felt 3 but I was so disappointed. I know they took a huge risk by signing on Aesop Rock as the producer and probably wanted to push their professional limits, but it just doesn't work. Their rap styles don't mesh with the deep, dark beats and I don't think their personalities match the feel of the album. I don't listen to Aesop Rock, although I recognize his talent, it's not someone I ever got into & Felt 3 sounds like listening to an Aesop Rock album. Eh. I've only listened to it twice so far, hopefully it will grow on me, but for the time being, I'm bummed. Stick with their solo albums & Felt 1 Felt 2.

I'm an established Atmosphere listener but this is my first time listening to FELT. This is the best cd I've bought all year. Felt 3 is packed with hard hitting tracks and has a great variety of flow that keeps you interested the entire time. It's got AMAZING BEATS that are really inventive(Great Dj). Just pure Hip Hop.
Favorite Tracks: Chewed Up Bass for your trunk Permenant standby...too many to list A few songs are a little too experimental for me but a great album nonetheless.

another great album to ensure I die happy,

it took a minuet to get used to slug over aesop but now i cant get enough of it. i havent heard 1 or 2 however, but i dont agree with aesop being "the wrong choice" for this album at all. the gritty east coast beats are a nice change to the classic feel of ant.

FELT 3: A Tribute to Retaining Artistic Credibility,

Murs (of Living Legends) and Slug (of Atmosphere, Rhymesayers) create another album full of B-list actress love and banging beats. For those of you expecting the smooth, flawless sampling Ant brought to Felt 2, you might go put that disc in an continue listening to it. If you're okay with creativity and artistic freedom, pick this up. Aesop Rock (Def Jux) created the sonic backdrop Slug and Murs find themselves traversing and is no disappointment.
One of the gripes against this album is the "personalities" of the artists clashing because of the style of production Aesop provides and how the emcees' styles are perceived against that production. However, it seems that both emcees are still on their respective game and Aesop's interesting, engaging beats provide a good playground for two artists willing to experiment, try new styles, and ride the beats in any way they can. Murs is at his swagger-best here, constantly reminding us why we loved him in the first place. Slug is no less himself: self-depreciating, quick-witted, and keen on giving quotable lines for the kiddies to put on their Facebook pages, despite a more serious demeanor and posturing. To expect full albums of amazing material from a group that doesn't work together all of the time is ridiculous. However, Felt has consistently come closest to allowing listeners these kind of ever-elusive albums, though each has stronger and less-interesting tracks. Ultimately, songs like "Protagonists," "Ghost Dance Deluxe," and "Give It Up" are the strength of this newest installment from the A-list, B-list worshipers. Despite the less-than-stellar reviews, generally centered on Aesop's production, this album stands out as a move away from the easy rhymes and uncomplicated narratives Felt as approached in the past, pushing the emcees to try new styles, new schemes, and explore fascinating new material that might not have come had they fallen back on a Living Legends or Atmosphere affiliate for the beats. Instead, Ace Rock brings darkness to Felt's world and balance back to the equation, leveling the playing field after an album (Felt 2: A Tribute to Lisa Bonet) that concentrated more on the fun, amusing side of these emcees.

Sad Clowns Shall Pass,
This review is from: FELT 3: A Tribute to Rosie Perez (Audio CD)
As a long time fan of Atmosphere and Ace Rock, I was both surprised and excited to hear what they would do together. "Felt 2" demonstrated that Murs & Slug were starting to find their groove together, but there's one problem: it's just Atmosphere featuring Murs. For Felt to make their own identity, they needed to break away and do their own thing.
On "Felt 3," Aesop Rock takes the El-P sound to another level. The best part is that you don't often see Def Jux & Rhymesayers working together. The result is Ace at his best, which is challenging these seasoned MCs to hear their music in a different way. Why do you think there are so many different flows on this album? They're out of their comfort zone and making interesting music. Have any of these guys ever made the same record twice? Not really. Unlike many listeners, I'm glad that Felt is still a creative force and hasn't conceded to riding on their laurels.

I'm pretty sure that the people who have rated this so low haven't listened to the album very much. I've listened to it well over 20 times and I think it just gets better. Aesops production gave them a little different sound which is exactly what these pioneers were working towards. The ones who don't like it were probably looking for the same thing they heard on the first two felts. This album will grow on you the more you listen to it. Overall I think that this is the best Felt album. That's my opinion.
