Grade 7 Up-In her introduction, Costello describes the stamina and physical fitness actors need to play certain roles. Her clearly written profiles on Cher, Goldie Hawn, Lucy Lawless, Demi Moore, and others include information on the personal convictions that led each highly motivated star to seek a lifestyle of sound nutrition and exercise. Readers will be inspired by the grit and determination evidenced by these individuals in achieving their goals. In the introduction to Trailblazers, Powell outlines various programs or regimens of physical training including yoga, aerobics, and weight training. Profiles include Joe Weider, the father of the sports nutrition industry; Jack LaLanne, owner of the first health club in the world; Jake Steinfeld, personal trainer of the stars; and Richard Simmons, who used television as the medium to promote nutritional and physical health. In both volumes, several captioned black-and-white photographs accompany each biographical sketch. Students with an interest in health and nutrition and bodybuilding may find good recreational reading here. The books will also serve as resources for health, life skills, and physical-education classes.

About the Author

Author Patricia Costello has been an author and editor for more than 15 years. She holds degrees from San Francisco State University and the University of Southern California. She has authored numerous elementary, middle school, and high school textbooks, and also works as a reviewer for several publishers, reviewing various educational textbooks. She is an instructor of English at San Francisco City College.

This book was great. The stars in the book were very candid and insightful. I was encouraged by the way that everyone in the book made it seem so easy to get in shape and stay healthy. I would definently recommend this to anyone who is new to getting and staying in shape.
