A really enjoyable biography comic - it takes you on a ride from Michigan to London.

And like the Martha Stewart title in this series, is a bit cheesy and awkward.

A Madonna comic book? Sounds great! However, as this title shows, things aren't always as good as they seem! Take Madonna 50 plus years and shrinking it down to a single comic book is no easy task. CW Cooke, the author of this title, does well to hit on every Madonna milestone in her life and career. From her early days in NYC to her current hommage to Mia Farrow, every base is covered. The problem is the writing is weak. And like the Martha Stewart title in this series, is a bit cheesy and awkward. The art, while solid, can be a bit confusing in places and Madonna never really looks like Madonna. Mike J.C.'s work is very soft and round, Madonna's natural structure is very jagged and sharp. So aside from a beauty mark and the iconic images of Madonna--the similarity ends there.

The cover is gorgeous and any Madonna fan would surely enjoy this light, quick read. It's nice to see this titles continue to get published and hopefully more titles will continue to hit shelves!

I wanted to like this latest item from Bluewater's Female Force series; however I have to say I found it, at best, wanting.

Anyone who would be interested enough in Madonna to buy a comic about her would, in my opinion anyway, almost certainly know the details of her career well enough that they don't need to see someone try to stuff more than 20 years of history into 21 pages of bland art, if you didn't know who's who in the thing it would be almost impossible from the art to tell, I mean "David Letterman" could just as easily have been Jimmy Carter... or Howdy Dowdy for one instance, and anemic writing.

It seems to me that a depiction of her oeuvre calls for as much originality and innovation as she showed, perhaps more of a metaphor of it as a whole, not a bland snippet of every detail, basically what we get here is the Classics Illustrated version of her Wikipedia listing.

Why bother?

The Female Force graphic novel series has covered influential women "who are shaping modern history and culture," So, I've talked about my obsession with educational comics here before. I love comics as an art form and a communication tool. And I love following Blue Water Comics' Female Force series, in which the biographies of famous women are told in words and pictures. The series really shines with its political figure titles, which offer a balanced look at their subject matter. And that has to do with Neal Bailey, who authored most of them. Aside from the Female Force titles, they're releasing other biographical series that make for interesting reading. Loved learning about Madonna in this different format!
