Book Description

April 2004
Over 150 full page, high quality figure pose photographs carefully lighted for use as drawing and painting reference.

Designed for students interested not merely in drawing figures accurately, but in ideal figures as they are described in clear lighting. After all, the translation of three-dimensional form onto a two-dimensional page or canvas is purely the representation of light as it streams across form. Careful attention to the lighting of a subject is therefore at the very purpose of any artist’s depiction of graphic and atmospheric art.

First chapter describes proportions in standing poses, illuminated in three distinct manners: ambient, form (single-source), and rim light. Then standing, leaning, seated, kneeling, and reclining—foreshortened poses. Particular attention is given to the pattern of light and shadow in each pose. It is easy to observe the crest-lights and highlights, indicating the joining of two or more planes.

The last chapters of this book are dedicated to head, expressions and hands. Here again, our model conforms to the conventional (and current) ideal arrangement of features.

A good figure draftsman is not a copyist. He/she instead designs the model and his/her pose. This book inspires students to contemplate their subject before plunging into a drawing or painting. Is she serene or nervous? Does he appear patrician or a dockworker? The student is encouraged to push expression...by all means, characterize!

In Hanna Pawlowska, we have an elegant, ideal female model posed at times barefoot, or in heels. These images are intended as an opportunity to cultivate the ideal in the student's interpretation of the human form. Paying particular attention to the attitude she exudes, from fingers to toes. Art and acting have much in common.

The Femle Nude I: A Pose Book For Artists is an ideal reference book for professional artists, illustrators, comic book artists, students, colleges and universities, and for all those who appreciate the elegance, rhythm and beauty of the human form.

Editorial Reviews

Review

The nicest I’ve seen. The photography and lighting really set this book apart. A real help when drawing idealized figures. -- Draw! magazine Fall 2004 Number 9

From the Author

Figure drawing is the backbone of an art education. Working from live models instructs the art student in the principles of light, form, rhythm, composition, as well as anatomy.

As an instructor of figure drawing, painting, and illustration since 1982, I have been aware of the gap which exists between the three-or-so hours a student may exercise before a live model once each week, and the atrophy which intervenes. Yet it is very nearly impossible to continue study at home without useful reference. Body building and men’s magazines are both unacceptable as such, and many magazines and pose books feature photography taken with short lenses leading to distorted proportions. Further, staging and lighting are most often neglected.

Professional artists are called upon to indicate and render figures of all types. Most important, however, are those which we idealize. Anyone who can draw or paint men and women of any race in their ideal convention will be capable of creating gnomes, gremlins, dwarves, monsters, etc. It does not work the other way around. An awareness of the ideal figure and head must therefore become second nature to the successful artist, for that is what film, advertising, editorial, portrait, and most other professional clients demand.

Do not underestimate the importance of head drawing...I have never known an artist who draws the head excellently, yet then fails to master the figure.

Enjoy the many uses of this book, ranging from quick sketch to finished painting. I am confident it meets the very specific standards of figure reference necessary to informed students of art.

1.0 out of 5 stars Not so good, here's why, January 21, 2005
This review is from: The Female Nude I: A Pose Book For Artists (Paperback)
All of the photos are black and white. Several are out of focus or suffer some motion blurring where either the model or photographer moved. Edges are poorly defined, the model often fades into the background on the edges. Detail is lacking, for example, it is impossible to distinguish the iris from the pupil in the eye. The lighting can sometimes be poor- throwing important features into deep shadow.

There's only one model. And, while she is a good choice for a representative of the female form, the photography and printing do not do her justice. Generally, all you get are basic shapes and outlines- made me think of stick figures or those basic shapes people sketch before adding details to a figure. An exception to this is the small handful of photos toward the end with close-ups of face and shoulder detail. Those are quite nice but there are not enough.

On the positive side the book has many different poses, so it has a good variety of poses.

Alternative:
Art Models Life Nudes- definitely the best model book I've seen. Search for 0976457334. Multiple models, color printing, better lighting and photography and a disk with all the photos. Each pose is shot from multiple angles. The photos on disk are big and clear and you can print any one you want as big as you want.

As a costume designer it is often difficult to find pose books that have "normal" poses that are not a photo of a body somehow artistically contorted into a pretzel or unrecognizeably foreshortened. This book has some very useful references for me and for that reason I like it. I do have to say, however, some of the poses seem right out of a 1950s pinup magazine--and the stripper shoes and stripper pole shots are a little over the top. Still useful.

5.0 out of 5 stars Saw This Fantastic Book At San Diego Comic Con, December 13, 2004
This review is from: The Female Nude I: A Pose Book For Artists (Paperback)
I kept running into artists at the San Diego Comic Book Convention who had bought "THE FEMALE NUDE I" pose book from the publisher's representative at the gathering. Everyone was talking about it! So I immediately went to the Associates In Art table and sought out the book to see why. This is the best book I've found for drawing the female form. It's obviously designed by a professional who knows how to tranfer the art of modeling to the printed page. It uses LARGE photos (full page) of carefully crafted poses that are staged beautifully against a black background. This is a "keeper" for those needing a reference book on the female form and who are disappointed in most of the "dull" pose books on the market.

This is also a perfect gift for those artist friends who are so hard to buy for. You'll be remembered for giving this item because they'll use it for years to come. I know because the artist friends that I gave it to are asking me where to get it to give out to their friends.
