2.0 out of 5 stars Entertaining but not a suggested first read, July 29, 2010
This review is from: Female Submission: The Journal of Madelaine (Hardcover)
I would like to praise this book but I cannot. I found it rigid and only consumable by my mind and eyes in short durations. I have read over a dozen non-fiction books on Dominance/submission (and the variations) in my own journey as a submissive female and I must say that I found this book to exist clumsily somewhere between reading like erotic fiction and something that wants to join the ranks of an expository on a D/s relationship and the psychological dynamics therein. I would like to be able to honor Claudia Varrin's years in the bdsm scene with a soaring review but I cannot. Not considering myself an expert on bdsm by any means, I have no clue what Varrin's intent was with this book; if there was one, outside of a poorly edited personal account that is hard to relate to and almost unrealistic. It could have been a beautiful story but Claudia seems to focus more on describing herself with soaring accolades than trying to help the reader respect her Dominant as she did. I found it almost impossible to appreciate the Dominant or find any dignity in the way she described him. Varrin relates his ailments and fragility more often than she discusses the method behind his sometimes brutal relationship with her. I would go so far as to call some portions of it chaotic and out of control; nearly unsettling. It is not the scenes I found unnerving but the whole relationship and the fact Madelaine's account of it is intended to be a reflection of a D/s 'relationship'. This is more of a series of accounts between a Top and Bottoming top as opposed to a loving Dominant and giving submissive. As has been suggested in reviews on other sites I would not recommend this book to a new submissive eager to explore the scene and her place within it and with a Dominant.
