4.0 out of 5 stars Excellent collection of essays about a repulsive topic, August 4, 1999

If you want to read about how men have literally gotten away with murder in legal systems the world over, read this book. If you want an overview of the subject of femicide, read this book. If you want in-depth reasons as to the widespread occurence of femicide, this book isn't for you. However, I recommend it because it's a good reminder of just how far women HAVEN'T come in so-called "civilized" societies, and it delves into atrocious acts that continue to occur in even LESS civilized societies than our own.

One aspect of this book I don't agree with it that it seems to paint women as helpless victims. If we would get our heads out of mainstream clouds, learn about the full extent of tyranny we live under every day, realize that it's all connected (from femicide to street harrassment) and fight back, even one person at a time (don't let that guy on the corner hiss at you and talk about your anatomy - fight back!), we could slowly make a change. It's quite obvious "leaders" in the government aren't interested in making changes to benefit us.
