Throughout history, there have been countless legends of female evil and feminine monsters. Authors often forget this, but John Grover brings us a collection of stories showcasing these oft-overlooked creatures of darkness! His research is amazing as he explores not only western mythology, but legends from across the globe!

The stories vary in theme, creature feature, and plot... vital for any short story collection. There's something for everyone! We have the classic ghost story, harpies, life-sucking beasts deep in the crypts and more! Well-written, thought-provoking, and a great read!

There are those moments when it's clear this collection was written by a male! There's some minor repetition of the heaving bosom elements as every creature seems destined to rival the latest Hollywood bombshell! Overlook the hot babe factor though, and you've got a fantastic collection of frightening tales!

I'm always interested to see how an author handles a "theme". In Feminine Wiles, John Grover has chose to focus on villains, specifically, the female variety. I enjoyed nearly every single story in this outstanding collection. Grover handles the themes of betrayal, lust, greed, and a host of others with a deft, knowledgeable hand. He has a gifted ear for dialogue and a firm grasp on his characters. Many of the stories were well thought out and led in directions that weren't expected. In this area, Grover excelled, I believe. Taking a simple idea and building the suspense and horror and turning something that would normally be mundane into something truly amazing. If you're looking for a host of great, well thought out, gripping tales, look no further. This author has the goods!

Horror author John Grover continues to add to his solid cannon of work with this anthology extolling the virtues of wicked women. There are no damsels in distress to be found between these covers. The reader may feel unrest as she/he keeps company with these femme fatales. A little girl unleashes a deadly game on her father for slighting her desires. A mother will go to terrible lengths for the chance to raise a faithful brood. And most chilling of all, a wraith haunts soldiers in battle, collecting souls not yet ready to die. Whether setting a scene, turning the light upon a ghastly detail, shocking us with an unexpected twist or tugging at our soul with a bitter truth, John Grover succeeds with his limitless imagination to raise the bar for new horrors. Make a cup of tea, light a candle, curl up in your favorite chair and be transported to a realm where a sinister villainess shall prey upon your darkest fears.

The stories in Feminine Wiles tread not lightly off the beaten path. In today's age of television and movies where females are often in need of rescuing, or even on occasion may serve as the heroes themselves, this collection takes us in a different direction: focusing on villains that seem just as Cruel as Ms. de Vil herself and often just as magnificent as the evil Maleficent.
I think the talented Mr. Grover has tapped into something very unique that deserves to be explored even further in additional collections. Just as the title suggests, these women are not damsels in distress, but forces to be reckoned with again and again as each tale builds and winds and twists — and not always where the reader may expect them to go. Definitely a thoroughly enjoyable read!
