Editorial Reviews

From Library Journal

Twenty contributors submitted the papers included in this volume, edited by Scheman (philosophy & women's studies, Univ. of Minnesota) and O'Connor (director of women's studies, Gustavus Adolphus Coll.). Not only is there a diversity of interpretation of Wittgenstein vis- -vis feminist theory, but there is great variation in these essays' incorporation of Wittgenstein's philosophical constructs as well. The first section of the book proves disappointingly unfocused, but later essays offer much food for thought as well as stylistic sparkle: Alice Crary cogently takes up "What Do Feminists Want in an Epistemology?" and elegantly weaves Wittgenstein's language theory into her considerations; Susan Hekman places Wittgenstein at the center of her discussion of feminist language games in "The Moral Language Game"; and Deborah Orr argues that feminists can mine Wittgenstein's work as a resource for building good conceptual theory. None of the writers here is well known, but many write with confidence and show suitable grasp of both the philosopher and the political theory. Scholars in either field will find this of interest.
