Book Description

April 2001 0761911510 978-0761911517 1

Feminist Reconstructions in Psychology introduces a distinctive new mode in doing psychology. This psychology is based on an increasingly popular range of ideas called social constructionism. Within the book, new forms of theory and methods of inquiry relating social constructionism to feminist topics are introduced. Each chapter highlights different topics of special concern within gender studies, especially the psychology of women.

The book draws from the central tenets of postmodern inquiry, as played out in the positive framework of social constructionism. Emphasized are reflexivity, the social basis of reality making, the breakdown of traditional narrative forms, the loss of objectivity as a scientific standard, and the possibilities for new forms of doing research. In this respect, the book is unique and serves to provide a point of view on an intriguing movement that is gaining momentum across the social sciences and humanities.

Editorial Reviews

Review

“The book is seriously provocative. It challenges all psychologists to be feminist and experimental in their research. It is worth reading because of what we might find out if we were.”

5.0 out of 5 stars Doing Psychology Differently, June 3, 2001

This review is from: Feminist Reconstructions in Psychology: Narrative, Gender, and Performance (Paperback)
There are no books available in the U.S. today that are designed to show what it might be like to do a feminist postmodern psychology. Using qualitative methods and non-traditional writing styles, I try to accomplish this by incorporating ways of doing and presenting research that will be unfamiliar to most gender psychologists. The goal I set was to inspire others to experiment with new methods, new presentational modes, and new ways of conceptualizing gender issues. It is an experiment in beginning an endeavor; not the last, or best of what there might be. I could imagine this as a useful textbook in courses in women's studies, psychology of gender, sex roles, and methods.
