I ran across this album completely by accident and I was hooked at first listen. I know nothing about Olivia Ruiz, but I really like this album. From the semi-non-traditional instrumentation (ukelele, clarinet, turntables) to her passionate voice, this album is worth hearing.

Makes me wish I would have kept up on my high school French.

You may find music clips on YouTube where Olivia Ruiz sings classical French chansons of Edith Piaf or Juliette Greco. That was how I came to know this modern French singer. Not that she sings such chansons in this album, but she obviously possesses a certain talent that has made some French songs very original and attractive to me. She also sings in good Spanish (and in accented English). I strongly recommend this album if you care to listen to something continental European.

Ruiz is almost unknown in Anglic countries. That is bound to change. She is extraordinary. The instrumentation is Franch Cabaret: a bit like Klezmer or even circus music (Ruiz is the daughter of professional musicians who played circuses at other things. All her albums are great. She is funny, thoughtful and fantastic.
