5.0 out of 5 stars Welcome to Femme-topia
This is the book femmes have been looking for! Shar gives lots of tips on basics, like makeup and keeping your skin baby-soft; skills aspiring femmes might need to practice, like walking in very high heels; and other, more "earthy" skills that one might use on one's butch or femme lover. She even gets into the variations on butches (i.e., from soft butch to...

2.0 out of 5 stars Has it moments but unbelievably self absorbed
There are some funny points in this book but I, unfortunately I was annoyed by the cliquey/self absorbed quality of it. I don't live in San Francisco, and the writer tends to be very wrapped up in her self and scene. It's not really worth paying $14 to read the life story of someone who seems to be living in a bubble and obviously needs desperately to be famous...

This is the book femmes have been looking for! Shar gives lots of tips on basics, like makeup and keeping your skin baby-soft; skills aspiring femmes might need to practice, like walking in very high heels; and other, more "earthy" skills that one might use on one's butch or femme lover. She even gets into the variations on butches (i.e., from soft butch to stonebutch) and gives a handy glossary of terms to understand and/or adopt.

This book could easily be titled "The Guide to the Femme Universe," so it could be good for butches and others who want to understand femmes better (something that would make many a butch's life easier!).

For femmes, reading Shar's book is like sitting around getting tips and chat from a brand new girlsistergirlfriend, who understands what it means to be femme! There are not a lot of femme books out there, so grab this one soon!

5.0 out of 5 stars Smart, Sassy, and Practical, October 17, 2000

Oh, the joys of being femme! In a smart, stylish tone Shar Rednour delivers the do's and don'ts, the ins and outs, and the hits and misses of being a femme in the 21st century. My personal favorite (and perhaps the most useful) section is the dating guide, which takes up a good chunk of the book. Whether you're into other femmes or long after tough butches, the author's tips on flirting, wining and dining, and boudoir etiquette are sure-fire. This practical and uproariously funny guide will also help those "middle-of-the-roaders" find their true calling as high diva femmes. It's about time femmes had their own beauty/dating Bible. This is it!

I sat myself down in a comfy book store chair to preview this book, and I couldn't resist- I had to take it home! Hilarious, light-hearted and empowering! It teaches everything from fix-it tips to dinner parties to mega-confidence! Fun for everyone and a real pick-me-up. Total femme without the prissy side effects!

5.0 out of 5 stars Fun, Sexy and Practical, December 29, 2000

Shar Rednour's guide is exciting and fun for femmes, femme-wannabes, butches, or anyone else looking to sparkle up their life. Rednour gives her readers advice while taking us on a stroll through her life and how she came to be at the center of her own femme universe. She leaves no stone unturned in bringing out the essentials of the femme world - from makeup to high heels to home decorating to the joys of nonmonogamy. I liked that she also covered femme/femme dating as well as butch/femme dating. Even if you don't consider yourself a femme, this could be a useful book for any woman looking to spruce up her image and her self-esteem and self-knowledge. I found Rednour's forays into her own life helpful in illustrating her advice.

4.0 out of 5 stars Bubbly and Practical Femme Fun, September 7, 2000

I just got this book the other day and I loved it. It's a mix of frothy silliness and practical advice for femmes. Everything from fashion and dating advice to suggestions on how to clean up your house. The book comes across like a long late night chat with a femme diva-y friend. Some will love the style (like me) and others won't. Rednour does chat alot about friends of hers and places where she lives, but since they are used as illustrative examples so it works. I highly reccomend this book for femmes (or those who love us).

5.0 out of 5 stars I LOVE SHAR!, March 16, 2001
By A Customer
This review is from: The Femme's Guide to the Universe (Paperback)
Shar is amazing. Her book is fabulous. Feeling sad about your life? Forget all those self-help books and read this one! After ending an andro relationship and rediscovering my femme self, Shar helped me feel revel in my femme desires, redecorate my apartment with hot pink and purple fabrics, buy a tiara, and build myself a vanity. Seriously, Shar changed my life. Now, if I only had a butch charming or two . . .

5.0 out of 5 stars Campy and hilarious, November 9, 2007
This review is from: The Femme's Guide to the Universe (Paperback)
Ok, I almost never laugh out loud when i'm reading, but this book made me laugh out loud so often that i annoyed my butch... i love this book. Not only is it hysterical and cute, i have actually found myself going back to it for tips, especially the stain removing and nail growing parts. I love that Shar Rednour comfortably included a huge variety of people into the identity "femme" from gay bio-boys to str8 girls, and just about everyone else. I also really appreciated the chapter on loving stone butches, i felt like it was intellegent, wise, and thoughtful. I suppose it's possible that people won't enjoy it, and maybe find it silly and pointless, but i think those people are just incapable of appreciating the campy style of Rednour's attitude. Buy it for yourself, buy it for the girlie amongst you, femme ID'd or not, buy it for the butches you know who love femmes. Just buy it, read it in the bath, have a good ole time!

Buy this book! It will make you scream with laughter--and in recognition, whether you're femme, butch, andro, or anywhere in between. A celebration of femmes, in all their lipglossed glory, with lots of great (and long-overdue) validation tucked in between the manicuring tips. Totally fun--the perfect birthday gift for all your girly pals.
