Since I was born in 1954 and decided a few years ago to learn to build guitars I decided to build a Strat as close to a '54 as I could. The first year of the Stratocasters.
Not much to really stress about building this "Strat". I used "swamp" ash, not alder, as the originals were swamp ash. I found a Fender re-issue 1957 Buddy Guy maple neck at a local shop. I made the body from scratch, swamp ash is lightweight and not difficult to cut and shape.
I bought a set of the Custom Shop 54 pickups and long story short this guitar sounds fantastic. It has the bite, twang and brightness of an old Strat and I would not part with it for anything. It can growl too...
A few hot players in my area have played it and all have praised the sound. A swamp ash body with these pickups would please any Fender I am sure.

Put these in my american special with the vintage wiring spec and absolutely love them. This is the way Leo made the strat to sound like.

I recently installed a set of these into a 1987 Japan market Squier Stratocaster. They replaced a set of Fender American Standard pickups in that guitar. I was looking for a more vintage sound from the guitar and hit on these. They have a clear sound with what I would call a 'pure' tone. They work great for clean sounds as well as slightly overdriven. Run through a Boss Metal Zone pedal? Nope. Stick with a Fender amp and amp or pedal overdrive and this is the ticket for classic Fender tone. I think they'd sound better with fatter (.10s or .11s) strings and I did have to fiddle with the pickup height a bit to make sure I was getting enough sound from the high E string and that they were balanced pickup to pickup.

The only reason I give these a 4 star rating is that the middle pickup should have been reverse wound for hum cancellation in the 2/4 positions. Other than that, good choice for classic pure and bell-like Fender tone.
