I expected this to be a solid backup guitar, but it is much more then that.

I may get a Mighty Mite clear finish body which would look great with the maple fingerboard.
Glenn Turner
It also does not have grooves so you can place the strings wherever you like.

The Baja Tele is a Fender Custom Shop guitar assembled in Mexico. The fat neck, broadcaster neck pick up and twisted tele bridge pick up are all parts found as after market upgrades, custom shop Tele's or the Baja.

The nocaster is twangy for country livin', but roll the tone back, add some delay and you have great alternative sounds. I love the Twisted Tele pick up in the neck. For Jazz or Blues soloing, it's thick and crystal clear. It will break up in a hurry, but boy does it sound great. The switch has four positions with an out of phase button in the volume. I was hoping they would have an out of phase tone similiar to a Strat, but no dice.

The neck is awesome. It is fat, bottom to top. If you like the more modern shaped thin necks, I would offer you a strong word of caution. I don't have big hands and still find it to be comfortable, but some of the stretches required for soloing or complex jazz chords can be challenging. At the same time, the tone is fantastic and the single piece, half a baseball bat has a lot to do with it. Ultimately, it's better suited to rythym playing (for me).

I went with the Baja because I wanted a Tele that could get dirty and lean more towards punk and alternative without losing it's country twang. Mission accomplished. No doubt, this plays thing plays country. But the super hot pick ups can get really growly with just a little bit of coaxing. The finish is great, but my pickguard did not fit right when it arrived. I bought a flat black pickguard (the same one used on the 52' reissues) and it sharpened it up a bit.

MIM=Made in Mexico
MIC=Made in China
MIA=Made in America

This may be a long review, but I will try to explain, in depth, why I am impressed and amazed with this guitar.

I never liked Made in Mexico Strats. Their neck just don't feel rolled and "soft" like the MIA Fenders. To me, the best felt like top of the line MIC Squier CV50's and CV60's. In fact, they usually are with upgraded electronics. Nothing that special. But, for the money, I like Squiers, not on the level of MIA Fenders but quite a lot. Don't take my word on that, google Keith Brawley, who has been a chief executive for Fender and Guitar center. He has stated that is exactly what the Made in Mexico "strats" are.

Now, comes along a MIM Baja Tele that feels and sounds like a MIA tele. The neck is THICK and almost round. The finish on the neck is not vintage dark, as I like, but it feels vintage, soft and smooth. The frets are smooth, action low and sound diverse and beautiful. Sparkly, soulful, rich and vicious. It's anything you want it to be. Does it sound like a typical tele? YES! It can, but it can do so much more. It has an unusual 4 way switch, and 2 of those settings are dramatically changed with the S1 switch. Every tone is usable.

The body is ash and it's beautiful. Mine has flecks of green in it. I expect it to age beautifully. It has wonderful resonance and sustain. I did have to adjust the bridge, which is very vintage and nice. You don't use an allen wrench but a very small screw driver. It also does not have grooves so you can place the strings wherever you like. You might think this would make it go out of tune, but it doesn't. It needed s shim under the neck. In this case a piece of tape. This is a matter of carefully removing 4 screws and putting a piece of tape there.

Amazing, I have owned several american teles and have an american standard start. I expected this to be a solid backup guitar, but it is much more then that. Crisp, a great chunky neck, a tele sound but with a 4 option pickup selection which i love and the tones I get are classic fender. Much Much more then i expected.

The best guitar for the money I have ever bought. The quality is great, played perfect right out of the box. The sound is exactly what I was looking for.
