Functional,
This review is from: Fender Frontman 10G Electric Guitar Amplifier (Electronics)
Small, light (less weight than, say, an industrial lunchbox computer), fairly loud for its size, built like the proverbial tank, no unwanted extras. And it's cheap! (Sixty at my local GC.) It has a very nice clean sound, which you can dirty up a bit via the built-in overdrive (there's a button and a gain dial). I especially like that, unlike many competing products, this amp is free from the usual multitude of built-in effects. My view is, if I need something, I'll hook up a pedal; good clean sound is all I need from a "bedroom" amp -- and I don't want to pay for what I don't need; from that standpoint the 10G looks ideal. This thing is good for practice and no-drums creative sessions with friends. Five stars.

The amplifier far exceeded my expectations. The sound that it produces is outstanding. It is much better than my $200 amplifier which is much bigger and heavier. The overdrive button is amazing. This 10 lb. product will be very mobile and when considered with the quality of the sound, I will likely never use my larger, more powerful and more expensive amplifier. I could not be more pleased with my purchase.

This is a good enough everyday, low volume, small apartment-ready practice amplifier. The volume gets actually louder, and it stays clean as long as you don't have the guitar dialed to 10 and hit the strings like a mad man, in which case it distorts the sound even in the clean channel. You shouldn't use this for practicing with your band, it was not designed for it. As for the sound quality, well, if you want tone you will have to pay for it... this thing is just to listen to what you are doing during your practices. I've got it plugged to my Stratocaster and my PC from which I play the tunes I practice along with. Works fine in that setting. One little caveat is that once you play what you practice with your 10G in a real amp... you might hear some mistakes you couldn't really listen to before due to the compressed sound of this little speaker. Advice: place it against the wall, in a corner, and the bass and overall tone will improve substantially.

Started out great, but is now defective; Poor Fender Customer Service,
This review is from: Fender Frontman 10G Electric Guitar Amplifier (Electronics)
I originally wrote a very favorable review of this little amp. It sounded and worked great for its first few months. However, after only 3-4 months of moderate (and entirely stationary) use, it has developed a HORRIBLE humming noise when the cord is plugged into the input jack. With a little delicate jiggling of the guitar cord, the humming will stop, but after a few moments it loses the connection and again hums continuously! It appears to be a bad internal connection at the jack. This is pretty pathetic for an amp which has not moved 1 inch since being removed from the box in which it was purchased. We will be calling the company to discuss remedying the situation. Before this problem began, I highly recommended this amp. However, due to these developments, I can only guess that quality of workmanship and/or the internal parts are poor. UPDATE 1/19/11: Fender customer service is horrible and incompetent. Although Fender agreed to replace this amplifier, the replacement process has been horrific. Even though this amp began operating defectively after only 3-4 months of use, Fender required us to pay for the return/replacement shipping. We shipped the amp to Fender and they received it on 1/5/11. As of today (1/19/11), we have not yet received the replacement amplifier. First, there was about a week delay before Fender shipped out the replacement amp. Then, it appears as though Fender gave FedEx the wrong shipping address, even though I provided Fender with the correct shipping address in writing. The next time I need a musical product, you can be sure that I will make a point to buy a product not made by Fender. Perhaps their higher-end US-made products are better quality, but my experience thus far is that Fender gear is very poorly made!

There are two reasons why you are trying to decide whether or not to buy this amp: You are buying this for someone who is just starting to get into playing guitar (maybe yourself) , or you already know what you're looking for and just need confirmation from reviews to buy it. Let's be clear, this is just the amp you need. It has exactly the right amount of control over the sound Bass, Treble, Volume, for each of the Distortion/Clean channels). You don't need more than that, and you shouldn't have less than that. The sound is clean and of good quality for both an amp this small, and an amp this inexpensive. It also has a 1/8" headphone jack and 1/8" input, the latter which I haven't used yet, but could come in handy, I guess. Of course, the main feature of this amp is its small size (and complimentary big sound). I kept the box to transport this little guy around; the amp is very portable and useful. This amp is the vertex of features, quality, and PRICE! I cannot recommend a better amp than this for a budding guitarist, or as a second amp for your apartment/office/bedroom.

Not a novelty. This thing is LOUD. Fits on a shelf.,

My "office" became a nursery recently, so I now have about 16 square feet for my "man cave" (i.e a corner in the rec room). The amp I bought 30 years ago was small, crackley and still too big for my diminished territory. Heavy, too. This amp fits on a small shelf along with my effects box. I have yet to turn the volume above 2, so I can't review it as well as others. But I can say that this amp -- until you use it -- looks like a miniature novelty version of a classic Fender amp, but it is no novelty. It is LOUD. Great for practicing and goofing around with my effects, yet I have to believe you could play a gig in a decent sized room with this amp. A tremendous amp in a small package.

Does the job, first of all. Hooked it up and played fine. For some reason I expected a little more punch, it only helps you hear it in a small room. If you turn it up too high you don't get the power, you get the buzz. Overall, worth the bang for the buck.

This Fender amp is the perfect size to practice or take along. It sounds great and I like the headphone and MP3 player hookups. Good value.

Not a Fender guy, but I love this amp.,

I'm a Gibson guy so this felt a little blasphemous buying a product from Fender, but the reviews were all good so I decided to do it any way. I recently moved out of state as everyone knows when you fly you can't bring an amp and it's expensive to mail one to yourself so I took my amp to my parents. After about 6 months I was starting to go crazy without it. A friend told me about these mini amps so I decided to do some research. After I found one that I liked I decided to order it. When it came I was shocked at how clear it sounds and how loud it gets. I am totally happy with this purchase, beats paying $300 for a brand new amp. I'm getting back to my old skill level and will eventually get better. The people that knock it because it's not good for live shows are crazy. It's a 12G amp dude, that's like buying a SUV then complaining it's bad on gas. It's made for home use only and I would recommend getting one if you need to practice.
