I bought this Hendrix G-Dec version of the Hal Leonard Play Long series, after purchasing the Fender G-Dec amplifier last year. I had several of the previous editions from this "play along" series which had CD backing tracks, which, I thought, were excellent.

This edition has a G-Dec SD card with presets that automatically adjust your G-Dec amplifier to approximate the Hendrix's tone as you play along. The Hal Leonard people did a good job with this, and the results are a close approximation. We should not be surprised that it is not perfect, given the large stack amps and special effect pedals Hendrix was using back in '69. A small modeling amp can only come so close to the original tone of someone like Hendrix, but it was close enough. The backing tracks were excellent, and nearly identical to the original recordings as was the case with the CD version. The backing tracks come in two versions, one with the lead guitar track, and another without, allowing you to fill in the missing part. Of course, there is tablature as well.

In short, the key to playing better is practice, practice! This series, whether you buy the CD version or the G-Dec version, will encourage you practice more with the music you love, and that will surely make you a better guitarist!

Before I talk about this book, I strongly recommend the G-DEC to anyone who plays guitar. It was suggested to me by a friend who has played guitar in a band for 20 years, and it has now become an invaluable tool.

Now to the book. I bought this for my son who has been playing guitar for about 3 years. He's 16 years old and has taken to studying Hendrix' songs. He's fairly knowledgeable when it comes to reading tabs, but this book has pushed him in to a different area of playing because now he has to understand the timing that Hendrix had. It's one thing to know the strings to play, it's another to understand how to slide into a transition the way Hendrix did. I recommend using this book and supplementing it with the various videos online to fully understand the nuances of each song.

The background tracks provided on the SD card are excellent and well-timed. Based on my experience with this book I will be purchasing other books from this series.

Great list of songs everyone has heard - also has more songs than most Play-Along books.

This product is great. Good backing tracks (demo and without guitar) on an SD card that can be played straight from the G-Dec or your computer. I like to download the tracks into my computer music folder and use them separate from the G-Dec straight into my PA. The best part is the effects! No need to buy and mess with multiple pedals. This makes you sound just like your favorite player at a fraction of the price. Also makes you sound like a better player.
