4.0 out of 5 stars Unexpectedly, better than average!, September 26, 2007
This review is from: Fender Mini Tone Master Guitar Amp
http://www.fender.com/ is the place to see the Fender amps and guitars in all of their glory, but, this little item is a surprise, and the price here is a "gift of mercy" to you if you don't have $[...] clams in your pocket! If you're just starting out on the guitar, or Mandolin, this is a great li'l practice and "party" amp., for "sing-a-longs", like Arlo Guthrie's "City of New Orleans, I have played through some smaller than these and just bought a mini 3 watt (advertised as a 10w)which the guy said it had a hum, (which was, in fact because it had to be "pushed to 10", cutting the system and overpowering the little solder-board... and you still received no sound but a high volume hum! (This "hum" comes w/ all amps!) But, this li'l "Fender" has proven itself over and over as something for beginners to test themselves out to see if they have the "calling" to be an instrumentalist, and it's been marked down so much that only a fool would pass this by, as I spent a couple of "C-Notes" when I started some 45 years back, and that was heavy bucks back then (in 1955 or so). It was a good thing that dad bought me a "Kay" guitar along with a "Omega" amp which was made by big companies, like "Fender", who would "NOT" put an item on the market to blow a name that has cost them over 100 years to found a mighty company on and they are NOT willing to blow it on a non-working P.O.S. like I bought that "hummed"!
No, my friends, if you are just starting out, this is one great way to go, to put yourself to the test..then in a year or a few months, you can have this collector's item, and I can bet that you'll never sell it as you tell your kids and their kids how you started with the li'l "Fender" on the Mantel, and then get it down and play it, as it does have that sort of power and sound!!..Try a link at your local "Fender" authorized shop as I did when I saw the lil amp, along-side was a "Marshall"-mini, and I would say the same about the "Marshall", for all of the same reasons.
What do you have to lose?? Really?? Would you rather go out and buy a half-stack from Peavy or Ampeg, Hartke??? Do you have $1500.00 just for the amp?? Maybe $1200?? And then watch your kid playing "B'Ball" all day and neglecting his guitar or Mandolin, cause he just doesn't "have it"??

I have been playing stringed instruments for over 45 years and I disagree with the first reviewer, he has NO IDEA of what he is speaking about!! All this guy sees is the size, and not one benefit!, How shortsighted~!

4.0 out of 5 stars Great for solo practice and writing, May 18, 2010

Ignore the 1 star reviews below. anyone who thinks you can get a full half stack for 30$ should not have the ability to write a review on this or any piece of guitar gear ever.

Yes it is small, it is ment to be a FUNCTIONAL REPLICA AMP.

that being said it is a nice little replica that resembles a true tone master amp very well. it would look nice on your desk with a tele or strat replica leaning on it. even the mini knobs are the correct design for this amp.

looks aside its the sound that really matters and where this thing really does get the job done. its clean tone does have the mention distortion when u crank it 8.5-10, however, anyone that has ever used a tube amp knows that this is what happens when the tubes get natural overdrive, now i dont know if that was fenders motive in designing it this way, but it is kinda cool when you think about it. it is quiet without any gain, so you will have to use it on about 7 or 8. however the clean tone is THE BEST i have heard on any practice amp, save the fender champ tube amp.

the gain knob adds some nice overdrive from about 2-5 and anything past 6 kinda sounds the same and just gets dirty. but in the range of 2-5 you can find a nice crunch.

The tone blend is so so, on 1 the sound is kinda choked and on 10 it is very bassy, but the range of 2.5-6 is not bad and most of the work is done btw those digits

Good: very fluid jazzy clean tone \ good posthardcore/indie/blues crunch \ compact enough for bring to lessons or have in a dorm \ headphone jack to play in your dorm or aptm.

Bad: Tone knob only contributes decent tone from about 3-7 \ some dont like it's tiny size (look at the jack for reference)\ 9v battery can bounce around and cause the amp to turn off

Over all: Excellent tone for a small amp and in my opinion sounds better than amps up to 300$ or 400$

5.0 out of 5 stars Great sound with a good pair of headphones, October 2, 2011

This review is from: Fender Mini Tone Master Guitar Amp
I have played through this amp for about 3 hours per day for 30 days now, and always with my over-ear Audiotechnica headphones. It sounds superb! Great tone and gain, got a distortion peddle which works great through it. Buy the Danelectro DC power adaptor for $8 so you can save on batteries. Buy this expecting to use headphones, or play very quietly through the speaker (with the headphones it gets plenty loud!) Great amp to use an electric guitar OR bass! I used my Ibanez bass and it slapped just fine through here! Super stoked, plus they hold their value, I just bought a Fender Mustang amp (Larger, with effects, $99) and was able to sell the mini tone master in 10 minutes on craigslist for $30 used! Talk about holding its value! Great great great, love it all the way. Rock them headphones all day long
