Guitar amps started out in the 1950s based on tubes, which were the only gain device available, and they aimed to distort as little as possible. But at high volume, distortion was inevitable. By the time much higher power and lower distortion transistor amps appeared, guitarists had realized a certain amount/type of distortion sounded much better, and the old tube amps were coveted. After many more "modern" designs, Fender started re-issuing the old Bassman, Twin-Reverb, Princeton, DeLuxe etc. Each of these had a very specific, unique, character when pushed into distortion. But each of these was a one trick pony, and costly.

Enter digital signal processing - DSP. A perfectly clean power amp could be fronted with reprogrammable DSP that could (very well) emulate the character of the beloved vintage amps. In addition, many of the "pedals" that guitarists had adopted over the decades, could also be emulated in DSP.

A Mustang II is a DSP-based amp. It has a very clean 40 watt power stage, a nice 12" speaker, a DSP-based preamp stage, and a software front end called "FUSE" that runs on a mac or PC, and graphically lets you rearrange the blocks in the DSP to emulate many of the great tube amps of past decades, and in addition adds in pedal and other effects, from phasing to reverb, tremolo, etc. In the Mustang I and II there are 24 memories to store "presets" in, a preset consisting of an amp "model", a speaker cabinet model, and various effects. How about rigging an overbiased little tweed tube amp with a 4 x 12" cab, a juicy flanger and a plate reverb? You get the idea.

The Mustangs come equipped with presets that try to please everyone, and thus please hardly anyone. It is only when the Mustang is connected to FUSE that it really gets its wings.

Let me preface this review by saying that I play guitar for a hobby. I'm not a professional nor do I gig on the weekends. I like to jam in the comfort of my own home. That's not to say that I suck or have no idea what I'm doing, but I'm just not as picky when it comes to specific sound profiles or speaker response.

With that being said, I've owned the same crappy, 15 watt practice amp for the past 10+ years. I've mainly played acoustic guitar during that time (no real need for an amp), but ended up receiving a Les Paul as an amazing gift and that changed things. Now I had this fantastic guitar and needed to find something worthy of amplifying it's sound.

I went to Guitar Center and tried out a bunch of similar amps (Vox Valvetronix, Roland Cube, and the Line6 Spider). The models on all of the amps sounded great and the options they allowed me were way more than I was used to having. Overall, I'll say that I really liked the sound from the Vox amp but it was more expensive than the Mustang and I didn't think the difference in sound was worth it. In my opinion, for the price, the Fender was a much better value than the others.

Like I said, I'm not as discerning when it comes to sound. Honestly, I was just ecstatic to have something more than a clean tone and a harsh overdrive from my practice amp.

So on to the pros and cons...

Pros:
-The amp models that come preloaded are great and there are a ton of custom options available with the Fender Fuse software
-This thing gets LOUD. I hardly ever take it above a 2-3 and that's really pushing it.
-The price was the best value I could find for the features.
-The size fits nicely in my music room without being some big distraction.

This amp does so much I can't comprehend all the adjustments. You would need to be very into you amp to realize all the adjustment function this amp delivers. With that said, the options I do use work very well. Clean, overdrive and reverb are excellent. the presets range from classic clean to crazy. The tuner takes patience and a little practice but when I compared to other tuners I have it is dead on accurate, This amp probably tends to ward classic rock, country and blues rather than shred and heavy metal but if you can only have one amp this would fit the bill. My son has a Mustang I and in my opinion the II is a much better sounding amp the smaller one sits unused. The II has much fuller sound. The Mustang I sounds like a practice amp and is easy to overwhelm. Fit and finish are vey good.

I didn't need a monster amp as I am just beginning to play (Have been in bands for decades but play the drums), but the features this amp provides are almost ridiculous in a good way of course! My best advise is to plug it into a computer and use the Fender Fuse program that comes with it. You practically don't need pedals and it does a decent job of emulating different style amps. I went with the 12" model because that is the best way to get the tone of a 4x12 cabinet. It is sealed back which helps also. Built in tuner is quite accurate on screen with the program.
AWESOME amp... (My guitarist is going to buy one now and he already has a Marshall 4x12 half stack!)

I play a 1965 fender twin when I'm at home.
The Fender twin is to heavy to lug around.
The Fender Mustang II has preset settings that are great.
I can get almost the same sound as the big Fender Twin.
