I already had owned a Fender American Stratocaster and a Gibson Les Paul model. When Amazon/Fender had a special sale before Christmas 2012, I decided to try a Fender Telecaster model. I chose the white version (Arctic White - it is not super bright white but a little off-white - nice in my opinion).

The guitar needed a little adjustment out of the box (height of low E string and intonation adjustment - not too hard to do if you have time).

There were no flaws in the finish.

The maple neck has a glossy finish. I think I prefer the satin finish on my American Strat, but it is not a big deal to me.

I do like the sound of the guitar, I think the pick-ups are quite decent. I didn't detect too much noise from the single coils. The sound has that special Fender sparkle without being too bright. The bridge pick-up is less bright than on many Fender models I have tried, and it has a little more "meat" to it. With a little distortion you can get a nice classic rock guitar sound just from the bridge pick-up, and this seems harder to accomplish on a Stratocaster (without adding any special effects or pedals).

The design with two pick-ups and 3-way switch is simple but very effective. A great variety of tones can be achieved, anything you would want for Blues, Funk, Country and Classic Rock (not Metal).

There is no bag or case with the guitar, so you might want to consider getting something to protect it. I chose to get an original Fender Tele/Start hardshell guitar case. They are $150 list price but you can get them sometimes for $100.

If I could have only one electric guitar, I think I might pick a Telecaster.

I am a bass player of 7 years, and I felt like it was time to learn guitar as well to write songs. I chose the telecaster because I love their sound, look, and it was recommended to me by many guitarists. I had heard that Squiers aren't terrible, but I had a little extra cash to dish out so i figured I'd buy a real Fender.

The guitar is a looker, the arctic white is beautiful and it's got that classic telecaster style The maple neck is smooth and fast, and it's easy to play. The electronics are fairly simple as well. It's got a pickup selector, a volume knob, and a tone control knob. But honestly, that's all that this guitar needs. It has that great clean Fender tone, great for blues and jazz. If you fiddle around with the pickups and your amp, you can also get great rock sounds out of it. The only thing I don't recommend trying with it is metal, this guitar is not really made for it. I have handed this Telecaster to friends who have played for years, and they have played some beautiful things I am not quite capable of yet. One of my friends even bought one just like it in Lake Placid Blue because he liked how mine played.

As for quality, lots of people have issues with Made in Mexico Fenders, but this Telecaster is very well made. The body is sturdy, the string-through construction is very well installed, and all the hardware works and sounds great. The tuners also stay very well in tune and feel nice and strong. Much better than the Squier quality I feared from the lower-end Fender products.

Pros-
-Good looking
-Easy to play, fast neck, good action
-Has a unique voice that is not lost no matter what genre you play
-Solid construction, good quality workmanship
-Great guitar to learn on if you have the money
Cons-
-The more discriminate guitar player would probably go for a more expensive Made in America model Telecaster like I did with my P Bass.

I own this exact instrument, and I have to say that I am extremely impressed with the quality and playability of this guitar.

Some of the MIM Telecasters can be hit and miss as far as having too much lacquer on the neck, etc. But, in my case, I got a guitar with almost none. It just has a nice comfortable "woody" feel to it. The neck is a little chunkier, but not huge. It feels about right for me, personally.

The pickups are good, and it sounds good. The pickups aren't great, and professional players may want to upgrade a bit, but I like the way mine sounds. It has that classic Telecaster "Spank" to it (however you can get warmer tones from it as well). This is a very versitile instrument, good for Jazz, Country, Rock, Hard Rock....really about anything aside from (very) Heavy Metal.

I was really considering this instrument, which I ultimately bought, and a Squier Classic Vibe Telecaster Custom. It's tough to say that they were a "Horse Apiece" in that race, as the Squier had a rosewood fretboard while this Fender Telecaster has a maple fretboard, so they were tonally different. I have to say, though, that the Classic Vibe sounded every bit as good, if not maybe even a little better than this instrument. So, Squier definitely didn't skimp on the pickups. And the Classic Vibe felt really good...it had a touch more lacquer than I like on the neck, and that weighed heavily in my decision. The Squier Classic Vibe instruments have some of the classic Fender Telecaster appointments (vintage style bridge, tuners, etc.) whereas this has a very modern adjustable bridge and tuning keys.

Overall, you can't go wrong with either the Fender Standard Telecaster or the Squier Classic Vibe series.

There is just something iconic, though, about owning that Fender......

Either way, though, you'll get that classic Telecaster "Spank" without breaking the bank.
