Editorial Reviews

From Booklist

It is a tall order to bring harmony, health, wealth, and happiness into a home and family. Still, magazine publisher Skinner, who claims to be the first English writer to document and explain feng shui, insists that the application of "wind and water" can indeed change your life. As proof, topics expand beyond the placement of furniture, decorating elements, and the assurance of unhampered positive energy flow; included is an array of information on Chinese herbal medicine, the application to education and relationships (among other facets), and pa kua cures to consider for revitalization of spirit and mind. Of the greatest interest to readers will be the elegant color photographs illustrating both room scenes and individual decorating elements--chairs, tables, flooring, and the like--that will make or break a harmonious vignette. Examples abound, including spraying with eucalyptus, lemon, or rosemary after an illness. And don't forget to face the door during critical business meetings. Barbara Jacobs

More About the Author

Stephen Skinner wrote, with Francis King, the classic "Techniques of High Magic" in 1976. He followed that with "Oracle of Geomancy" and "Terrestrial Astrology: Divinatory Geomancy", which has become the standard work on Western divinatory geomancy. Highly illustrated books on "Nostradamus" and "Millennium Prophecies" followed. He also edited "Aleister Crowley's Magical Diaries" and "Astrology".

In the 1970s Stephen was responsible for stimulating interest in John Dee and Enochian magic by publishing through his imprint Askin Publishers the first reprint of Meric Casaubon's "True and Faithful Relation of What Passed for Many Yeers between Dr John Dee and some Spirits.." and Dr Donald Laycock's key reference book on the angelic language "The Complete Enochian Dictionary".

He is currently working with David Rankine to reproduce the best available source books of practical ceremonial magic, particularly from old never before printed manuscripts owned by practising magicians.

His latest book on magic, "The Complete Magician's Tables" is a book of correspondences, which with more than 800 tables, is the most complete tabular book of magical correspondences in print.

Stephen is also the author of eight books on feng shui, including the first English one in the 20th century.

He has written more than 27 books translated into 20 different languages. He lives in Johor Bahru, near Singapore, where he researches both feng shui and classical magic.

5.0 out of 5 stars I loved this book!, November 25, 2001
This review is from: Feng Shui for Modern Living (Hardcover)
Contrary to one of the commentaries on this book, I loved it. I have read over 25 Feng Shui books and felt Mr. Skinner's version was put together very logically, with beautiful pictures, and is easy to follow. I would recommend this book for both beginners and knowlegeable people. I just brought it home from Thanksgiving vacation and used to it help my mother understand Feng Shui as we worked on her house. Great Book!

2.0 out of 5 stars Big Glossy Pictures, Little Information, May 14, 2001
By A Customer
This review is from: Feng Shui for Modern Living (Hardcover)
This is the sort of book you leave lying around on your coffee table, but that no one actually picks up and reads. It has lots of beautiful glossy pictures and is quite attractive. But as for information on feng shui is concerned, I learned very little. A lot of the time the book seemed to think you already knew all about it, so why both getting into the details of how feng shui works, rather lets put in a lot of pretty pictures and vague, common sense commentary. I know nothing about feng shui. But I can tell you that i learned as much as what i learned from reading this book, by browsing at various feng shui books at the local bookstore for 10 minutes. If you're interested in snooty glamorous home decorating, you'll probably like this book. if you're looking to learn about feng shui and how to apply it to your life, find some other book. If you want a pretty coffee table book, this is a good choice. it gets a 2 for all the nice pictures. disappointing.
