5.0 out of 5 stars Hauntingly Beautiful, October 10, 2001
By
This review is from: Feng Shui (Audio CD)
I first heard this CD in my T'ai Chi class, and the music just stayed with me. Particularly beautiful is the first song, "Right Mindfulness." It invokes high mist-covered mountains covered in greenery. The peaceful melodies don't leave the mind easily, and help the listener relax and tune inward. It is flowing and smooth, and hauntingly beautiful. Highly recommended for any exercise that requires gentle movement. For me it is "moving meditation."

5.0 out of 5 stars Nice background music for Yoga, October 18, 2004
By
This review is from: Feng Shui (Audio CD)
Chinmaya Dunster's music has been a favorite of mine for my Yoga classes. Check out Yoga on Sacred grounds, for example. Feng Shui starts with Rigth Mindfulness - a poignant piece of music that conveys the picture of steadiness as of a series of mountains in the sight of a viewer. Somehow, this track reminds me of the past; as we go through the postures I think back or brood a bit. Rigth Views reminds you of the springtime or freshness as the insert describes. The pace, as with the first track, is ideal for most of the asanas. The next track Right Livelihood opens with a somewhat distracting chant and is supposedly of the wind. This track is great as one proceeds deeper into the asana session. Right Samadhi has a beautiful accompaniment of the bamboo flute, but you may not want to practice Shavasan during this track. Right Morality is about receptivity; it also has an air of freshness to it as it starts. The guitar and violin compete equally for your attention. The Right Effort starts with a native chant and reminds you of nature with the melodious penny whistle and flute bringing life to the tune. Right speech brings the message of connectedness, rhythm and melody; once again parts of it make you reflect. Right Intention, like Right Views, opens with a fresh native song. The flute is spring-like and most beautiful here. Wow, nice background music for a Yoga class. I will look for more Chinmaya Dunster music for my Yoga classes.

By the way, outside of a Yoga class the music is great to relax and reflect. Nice, nice, nice...

GREAT MUSIC FOR BACKGROUND DINER MUSIC OR RELAXATION. I USE THIS CD FOR RELAXATION AFTER I TEACH A YOGA CLASS. I AM A YOGA INSTRUCTOR AND ESPECIALLY LIKE #3,#6 AND #7 FOR RELAXATION FOR 5 TO 10 MINUTES AFTER THE CLASS IS COMPLETED. THOSE 5 TO 10 MINUTES CAN BE THE BEST MINUTES OF YOUR DAY.

Creatively structured to present each musical piece as an element of the Buddhist Eightfold Path this CD isn't exactly what I was looking for when I bought it at that particular moment, but let's put this one down to a serendipitous accident. Chinmaya Dunster takes traditional Oriental instruments and mixes them artfully with Occidental instruments to create this calming yet dynamic CD to embody the essence of the Buddha's Middle Path. It's excellent background music for the home office, the Tai Chi, Yoga or Qi Gong class, or simply for taking a refreshing break in the midst of your day.

5.0 out of 5 stars Hauntingly beautiful, June 1, 2009
This review is from: Feng Shui (Audio CD)
Chinmaya's music on this CD has a beautiful, haunting quality - it is very much in the pattern of his previous CD, Celtic Ragas.

In my view, this music should not be "button-holed" as belonging to practitioners of Feng Shui, meditation, etc. It can be listened to purely for pleasure by anyone, in any context.

Marvellous stuff.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fusion/Buddhist-Tinted Tunes, March 18, 2009

Feng Shui (2000) marks a big step forward for Chinmaya Dunster. The album is an instrumental fusion presentation of Buddhist-tinted tunes. On the disc, Dunster plays sarod, celtic harp, santoor guitars, bass, keyboards, and percussion. He is also joined by a supporting cast on violin, flute, and hammered dulcimer. The music aims to evoke the Inner Feng Shui -- known to Buddhists as the Eightfold Path -- "the essence of which brings transformation to our inner world." Also by Chinmaya Dunster and recommended is Yoga: On Sacred Ground.
