2.0 out of 5 stars Pretty Pictures, not enough beef
The pictures in the book are pretty, but the book read more like a western design book than a feng shui book. It discusses the most rudimentary elements of feng shui and I recommend it to people who are not really interested in learning about traditional feng shui. This book is designed for westerners who want a simplified, superficial look at the westernized notion of...

Glossy pictures throughout also make it a great coffee table book, and an ideal gift. In fact I have bought so many copies for friends I think Gina Lazenby ought to pay me commission!

Not to be missed.

5.0 out of 5 stars Beautiful photography, user-friendly, great for westerners, June 28, 1999

I found this book while looking in the home improvement section of a bookstore. Before then, I knew nothing about Feng Shui. Since then, I have become very interested because of this book. It includes before and after pictures illustrating how big a difference Feng Shui principles can make in your home environment. This book uses the form school of Feng Shui, which does not require the use of directions (north, south, west, east) and instead uses the juxtaposition of the parts of the house to the front door. Other books require you to use a compass and graphing tools, which can be cumbersome. Also, I have found the discussion of using symbols such as dragons and bamboo flutes in other Feng Shui books to be less relevant to me as a westerner. This book is absolutely beautiful and will enable anyone to use the principles of Feng Shui to improve their home environment.

5.0 out of 5 stars This book's a winner., January 21, 2000

Well I'll add my voice to the chorus of recommendations. I'm a feng shui rookie and this was the first book I bought on the subject. I'm very pleased with it. I'm interested in home decorating applications, so the many great color pictures of home interiors are what sold me. I was looking for inspiration and found it.

The book also has a solid overview of the principles. Though I consider the author a good teacher, but not a great one. Perhaps it's just the complexity of the subject that left me a little confused about some of the principles (or my own shortcomings :)). But it seemed like some things could have been clearer. For example I'm still befuddled about the precise methods of using elements to correct defects in sections of a bagua. Do mirrors and wood and other materials have the same compensating effect in each area?

Anyway, I need to keep studying the subject. But this book was a really good start.

5.0 out of 5 stars A home decorating book you will actually read, use, & enjoy, December 5, 1998

This review is from: The Feng Shui House Book: Change your Home, Transform your Life (Paperback)
I admit it. I was first attracted to this book's cover. I bought it, brought it home, and (this is the amazing part) I had it read in less than 24 hours. It was a fun, approachable, enjoyable read with plenty of inspiring ideas for transforming the rooms in my home that were just "there" into wonderfully relaxing and beautiful Feng Shui sanctuaries. The author skillfully teaches you about the principles of Feng Shui in a practical, easy to understand way. There are even questions to ask yourself about your life that serve as indicators of the level of Feng Shui balance in your home. Using the information in this book I was able to create my own simplified charts and worksheets for each room in my home; worksheets I can take with me when I'm out on the prowl for items and fabrics to decorate my home. Among the changes I made in my home were the addition of wind chimes on my back deck, a fish tank to my kitchen, and plenty of rearranging of furniture and possessions that never seemed to work no matter where I put them. This was really one of my best investments in '98 and more than 5 of my friends immediately ran out and bought the book--and raved about it. I am now purchasing more copies for Christmas gifts.

Other books I have read on Feng Shui were a bit dense or very much imbedded in Chinese culture, and not so appropriate for my life as a Westerner. This one is clear, poetic and concrete all at once, appropriate to the Western situation, and inspiring. It has questionaires to assess where in your life you need improvement, and how to use the feng shui chart to transform trouble areas in your home to bring about a change. There are many examples of "before and after," to help you adjust your home. This is a whole new way of looking at Interior Design, and anyone interested in making some changes in their home would be interested in what this book has to say.

I love this book! It's absolutely beautiful and totally inspiring. It's also full of practical sensible advice on how to use feng shui in your home. I own lots of books on feng shui but this is the one I dip into whenever I want a fresh source of ideas for my home.

My favorite part of this book are the transformations. Nicely decorated rooms are turned into beautiful, comfortable ones.

I've given it to a few people; always positive response.
