Clear and practical,
This review is from: Feng Shui Quick Guide For Home and Office: Secrets For Attracting Wealth, Harmony, and Love (Paperback)
Feng Shui Quick Guide for Home and Office was exactly the Feng Shui book I was looking for. The book explains the concepts of Feng Shui clearly and in plain English but without dumbing it down. It is completely accessible for someone who doesn't know a lot about Feng Shui.
The book begins by explaining the basic concepts very clearly. The basic tools of Feng Shui -- Chi, the Five Elements, the Bagua, and Yin and Yang -- are covered in detail. What really impressed me was the way they were demystified. The author uses the original Chinese terms but then explains how these tools can be applied in modern Western culture. One of my favorite parts was where the book explains that just adding traditional Chinese symbolic objects like Fu Dogs and red envelopes won't do anything for a Western house if the symbols don't mean anything to the residents. The tools and philosophy of Feng Shui have to be translated for Western culture if they will be effective. The book focuses a lot on clutter, which seems to be one of the biggest problems in American houses according to the author. The book also includes 366 tips for improving spaces, which is a good source of motivation for making changes. Above all, the book is practical. It only explains as much of the abstract Feng Shui philosophy as is necessary, and it is dedicated mainly to teaching people how to apply the principles in their own lives. I highly recommend it.

Defining Feng Shui for Everyday Life,
This review is from: Feng Shui Quick Guide For Home and Office: Secrets For Attracting Wealth, Harmony, and Love (Paperback)
The ancient art of Feng Shui comes alive in this practical text for everyday use. The color logo on the cover helps orient you to the 5 feng shui elements, which I knew little about before reading this book. The blue squiggley lines representing water and its movement helps carry the book forward through its chapters which define feng shui, how it can positively affect your life, and what you can do to prepare yourself to make changes. Olmstead explains why day-to-day clutter, wornout clothes, and dying plants can interfere with your ability to attract good people, good fortune, and creativity to your life. She also gives a step-by-step approach to making small changes to start. So, I started with my closet and next time will take on my files. It feels better already!

Practical Feng Shui,

Feng Shui has finally made it into the mainstream with Olmstead's new book. Far from being "woo-woo," Feng Shui: A Quick Guide for Home and Office gives an easily understandable history of Feng Shui and a practical approach that I have found useful in my daily life. For instance,I have tried to arrange and decorate the rooms in my home, as suggested in the book, to reflect the bagua of Feng Shui, and I have enjoyed the results. After reading the book, I changed the orientation of my desk in the living room and created a reading area, and the room was far more welcoming and balanced. The book also pays homage to the seasons and includes a calendar of 366 Feng Shui tips, which are great fun to read and employ in your daily life.

Great book filled with practical tips,

This is feng shui for the 21st century - practical tips on incorporating the ancient principles of feng shui into your everyday life. I love how it's organized so you can quickly find what you are looking for, and there are lots of helpful hints to help fix the negative energies in any room. I follow Carol's advice a lot (in the book, on her website and in her e-newsletter) and good things happen when I do! According to Carol, "leaky faucets...symbolize prosperity, wealth and abundance dripping down the drain" (page 162). I recently removed a leaky old sink that I could no longer get parts for and THE NEXT DAY I received a fabulous job offer at nearly twice what I had been making working for myself.

Feng Shui for Real Life,

This review is from: Feng Shui Quick Guide For Home and Office: Secrets For Attracting Wealth, Harmony, and Love (Paperback)
I like Carol Olmstead's Feng Shui Quick Guide. The book is arranged in a very friendly manner. All unfamilliar words and principles are clearly and concisely explained in short chapters. By focusing on "The Five Power Principles" of Feng Shui, the book flows in an orderly fashion through the basics. Bulletted lists, charts and drawings help the visual learner solidify the concepts of Chi, The Five Elements, the areas of the Bagua and Yin and Yang. Smart Lady, Ms. Olmstead dedicates Part Three of her Five-Part book to Clearing Clutter, an under-acknowledged topic in 3/4 of Feng Shui books out there today. Part Four (my favorite) provides an entire year of daily feng shui tips. Just when you thought you knew it all, Carol comes in with fresh ideas and insights that will keep you going back to the book all year long! Dispersed throughout are snippets from the personal lives of Carol's clients and their glowing success stories. This book sounds like Pyramid Feng Shui to me, but Olmstead does not refer to it as such. She kindly provides an overview of different feng shui schools and terms her version "Feng Shui for Real Life." Fun and inspiring, you'll probably want to read this one more than once. Two thumbs up...

This book is so much fun to read and easy to follow. It makes a great gift, too, for that person who has everything and nowhere to put it. I wish I had read this book years ago! I have it marked up with lots of ideas of my own, too, and refer back to the book often. The author put a lot of her own personality and thoughts into her book, too, and she is very responsive to individualized questions. Thanks for a great book!
