Book Description

October 30, 2005
This book gives retailers an insight combined with practical knowledge of the concepts of Feng Shui and how they can be used to enliven your retail space and stimulate better sales. By applying many of these ideas, a retailer can energize and balance their store, making it more welcoming and comfortable for customers and staff. Author Linda Cahan covers locations, entrances, selling floors, walls and non-selling spaces. She describes how color, cures and intentions relate to making a more inviting and successful store. She answers commonly asked questions, offers referrals and provides a glossary of retail-related Feng Shui terms. A must-have for any Feng Shui practitioner, even those not practicing should consider some of the ideas to remedy new, renovated or tired retail spaces.

Review

Feng Shui for Retailers By Linda Cahan Reviewed by Martin M. Pegler Published in RETAIL design, May 2006 I have known Linda Cahan for a long time and always appreciated her talents as a visual merchandiser and as someone who could teach what she practices so well. Thus, I was totally delighted to see her new book, Feng Shui for Retailers, and to be able to recommend it most heartily. Feng Shui, for the very few of you out there who may not have heard of it, is all about the positive energy in a space and how the placement of objects in the space can affect this flow of good energy that produces happiness and success. And, since retailers are involved in placement , the placing of fixtures/fittings, of furniture, of merchandise, of locating things and objects, and since all retailers are interested in getting positive results from their enterprises, what Linda Cahan s book has to offer should be of interest to them. Now I must honestly admit in writing, I do not absolutely buy all of the Feng Shui practices. I do believe that the ideas and recommendations set forth by Linda really make sense for retailers. Her advice is solid and on target for visual merchandisers and store designers since so much of what she offers is so logical and down-to-earth. The book is divided into simple, easy to read chapters profusely illustrated with charming little thumbnail sketches and diagrams provided by the author. There are feature squares that highlight important concepts such as Energy! You ll see a lot of his word. While I might refer to it as Chi or Qui, just to mix it up, the English term energy is what you ll see most often. Energy has many meanings. The simple, scientific explanation of energy is the capacity of something to work. In this book, energy is referred to as the force that resides I all things, alive or manmade. She talks about arranging your store so that energy flows smoothly and unobstructed to make the space more pleasurable for you, your staff and your customers. Now, isn t that what it takes to have a successful retail establishment? Linda Cahan leads readers in a conversational tone through some of the murkier elements of Feng Shui, the symbolic elements and such, which the reader may or may not buy into, but then she balances that with crystal clear logic and know-how about store design and how to merchandise a space. And, in case you missed anything, she ends each chapter with a review in which she clearly states the principles and concepts stated in that chapter. For those who enjoy being rested there is a quiz, just to make sure that the reader understood that what can be a mystic experience is also a logical step by step journey to better store design. The book was published by ST Media Group of Cincinnati, Ohio and can be purchased directly from them. So become a believer, try it! I m sure that you will not only like it and become intrigued by the concepts, but since Feng Shui is rapidly gaining adherents around the world, it is something you should know about. Linda Cahan s book, Feng Shui for Retailers, is an excellent guidebook to this new realm for new retailers. --RETAIL design, May 2006, Reviewer: Martin M. Pegler

5.0 out of 5 stars Making your life better thru Feng Shui ..., November 29, 2007

This review is from: Feng Shui for Retailers (Paperback)
Over a decade ago I was in Las Vegas staying at the MGM Grand while they were doing major re-construction to change their entrance. The existing entrance was a Lion's head and Asians refused to enter the casino through the mouth of it perceiving that as bad luck. The casino was losing potential customers and had already started creating a new and separate entrance during my stay.

This got my attention. To go through all that trouble for something called Feng Shui. To spend millions of dollars just to change the entrance - well, there must be something there.

A friend gave me Linda Cahan's book as a present. I've been interested in Feng Shui since that time in Las Vegas and have now used it in conjunction with my stores and my home. Ms. Cahan did a bang up job delineating the info in a clear and decisive way. I also liked that she represents the opinions of many other Feng Shui experts so I feel I've gotten the best cross section of information possible.

I've played with some of the 'cures' mentioned in this book to correct problem feng shui I've identified, and have noticed perceptible improvements. The suggestions using mirrors have been very effective. That sold me! I'm a big fan of feng shui and an equally big fan of Ms. Cahans easy to use guide to making your life better through feng shui. I like her approach and recommend this book as an easy read with effective useful ideas for work or home.

Ever walk into a store and want to walk right out? Can't figure out what's wrong? Could be bad Feng Shui!

This eye-opening book shows retailers how to lure customers with an inviting atmosphere that makes them want to stay, shop, buy and enjoy the experience. Store owners are guided through a simple step-by-step process allowing them to transform a ho-hum store into a great feeling store.

I'm not alone in my praise of this insightful book. Martin Pegler, editor of Retail Design and Visual Presentation magazine recommends it "most heartily . . . Her advice is solid and on target for visual merchandisers and store designers since so much of what she offers is so logical and down-to-earth."
