I have more than a few flashlights. My first high tech was the Fenix TK41. I know there are more powerful lights out there, but they also cost more. I love the TK41. I wanted at least a 200+ lumens light for my vehicle at a lower cost. I've heard at least 200 lumens recomended for a non-lethal weapon; something to disorientate an attacker. When I found the E40 at 220 lumens, I thought I would order it.

I just tested it outdoors tonight with our beautiful August 2012 blue moon. I compared it to other flashlights and spotlights, I carry in my vehicle. The E40 clearly outperforms them all. The 3 different intensities are usefull, but I was impresed with the throw (at high output) of great illumination for an under $50 light. I consider this a good investment! The fact that it also runs on only 4 AA recharble batteries (Eneloop) is a plus.

Just what I was looking for, a great throwing LED flashlight that runs on the abundant AA. It throws better that all of my more expensive lights that run on cr123's. Feels good in the hand, good runtime and all for a great price. The only reservations I have is that the rear buttons are not easy to activate in all grip positions and it did not come with a holster.
I would recoment it to anyone who is in the market for a light with excellent throw.

This is my first Fenix LED flashlight, I wanted something that was good quality and that had great reviews, Fenix had both and a great selection of price points to choose from. Yes it is "Made In China", but compared to the Made In USA Maglite's I have owned the quality is top notch and the optics of the reflector are excellent. The body of the E40 is molded high quality plastic, not the machined aluminum feel's rugged and ergonomic, I do agree the C of G is off, but I do not find the light tipping out of my hand often. The lens and LED holder is machined aluminum and acts as a heatsink as well. The battery holder is nicely designed and holds the cells as intended, no mismatched fit or poor quality contacts.

When I first put in the 4X AA cells and turned it on I was blown away by how bright this flashlight is, prior I used one of those cheap LED flashlights that are available at your typical local store and the difference was outstanding. The beam throw on the E40 is incredible, the distance of 260m is no joke and security wise it works great around the house. The light also attracts a lot of attention when you use it outdoors at night, I suppose people are not use to seeing something so bright and so powerful. I have not found much use for the different power settings, I use full power and while the strobe is good for emergencies, I only tried it and it's quite effective in getting noticed.

I have found this light to be more of a spot light instead of a flood, that is the pattern is very tight and while it does illuminate an area well it's not a flood light by any means.

Full review:
I got this light because I wanted the brightest 4xAA light I could get for a reasonable price. I own several Fenix lights, and they've all been great, so I have a bit of brand loyalty. This new model from Fenix is my most expensive light, so that should give you an idea of my expectations as you read on...

First the pros:
-It is bright. This is the best/brightest flashlight I've ever purchased and was blown away when I finally used it outside at night. Easily 100+ yards of usable throw. It's awesome. Wish I could give an exact number, but my test subject is a tree 100 yards away, and this light lit up the tree canopy amazingly.

-Very very throwy. This is good or bad depending on your needs. Not a lot of spill, just an incredible throw.

-Not a fan of a strobe mode, but if a light I want comes with strobe, it must be a hidden mode. They executed that perfectly on this light. You hold the mode button for a second to go into strobe. Mode memory does not apply to strobe.

-The size of the light is great. I have big hands and the size is comfortable.

-The light itself looks cool. It is proudly displayed in a perfectly-sized slot in my truck's center console.

Now the cons:
-The head of the light is metal, what you'd expect. The body though, is plastic. A special plastic, I'm sure, with plenty of prefixes in its name, but a plastic nonetheless. It feels cheap in the hand. The plastic may be nice for cold weather, but it makes the light feel cheap (which the light is not), and throws the weight balance of the light off.
